US retailers (online too) won't ship ArcTeryx to Canada.

No but for us out on the coast, they'll ship to Point Roberts

I'll probably feel guilty about this but I will let you in on a secret: a nexus card and a mailbox at TSB Shipping in point Roberts is how you can score your name brand outdoor gear at MEC prices. Since they never make you pay any tax at the border you are already 12% ahead.

There is no secret. Border officers will never make you pay if you don't declare it. Same thing other people do with purchases from 202 warehouses. But if they want, they can make you pay. I think they worry about drugs and guns more then about carabiners or Scarpa boots.

Some go to Mt. Baker or Cascades in summer, pick up new rope, bag, backpack etc. and then come back next day.

BTW, you can't get 12% ahead already. WA tax is 8.4% for each item, sometimes you pay shipping to postal office and you pay fee of 2-3$ for each box.

I found MEC cheaper for some items, and if you add their warranty. However, I like to shop on-line for majority of my gear. Some items I have, are not available at our Co-op.

In the last six months I have, on multiple occasions, declared as much as $400 in merchandise ordered online and picked up at the receiving service I use in Sumas (literally spending less than 10 minutes in the US), and the border agent hasn't even blinked while waving me through. As long as you don't have hard liquor or tobacco, they seem pretty lenient lately.

You may pay the price of your integrity. I certainly admit it's a temptation though in the end though, it isn't any different than being a tax cheat, or a thief.

I love my country and my Province. I pay my taxes and I have no criminal record. I have never touch other peoples property.

At the same time, I rarely buy anything in British Columbia. I buy Starbucks coffee from time to time. Or Tim Horton's. I don't even eat in our restaurants.

Everything I buy is from USA. Including climbing gear, books, gas, food, bikes, clothes, small appliances etc. I eat in Fairhaven, Bellingham, Seattle or Portland. Have you tried food and beer at Boundary Bay Brewery? Very good! Better than Shady Tree ...

I think it's rip off to eat there.

I still don't feel I am cheating my country or my Province. I love Christy Clark! She is so awesome!

I am just helping USA to come back from recession. We all have to show our Canadian integrity and make US strong again.

You guys are lucky!

A few months ago, I went to Point Roberts to pick up a little under $200 worth of stuff I bought and had shipped to mailbox there. There was some stuff from REI and some 20 year old climbing gear (for my personal collection). The border guard made me pay taxes on them. He even went as far as to have me show the emails (if I didn't have them on my smartphone, they would have had me use one of their computers) to prove how much I paid for the old climbing gear so that they could tax me.

Wow: duty-free limits going up with the new federal budget.

Starting June 1, Canadian travelers returning from a 24-hour trip to the U.S. can spend $200 duty-free, four times the current $50 limit. Anyone coming home from a 48-hour absence can legally cross the border with $800 worth of goods, double the current limit. The seven-day exemption was bumped, too, but only by $50 to $800.

Isn't that nice, Piika!
Looks like Canadian Feds doing everything to help us regain long time lost integrity.

Could you please also check my math?

If we were allowed to bring 50$ but we were bringing 200$, is this means now when we are allowed 200$ we can bring 800$?

I am gong to test that in few weeks!

Can anyone explain how this isn't harmful to Canadian business?

Also, anyone who thinks it's okay to illegally avoid paying taxes at the border is out of touch with the reality of the demands on public coffers to provide services and infrastructure for the current population.
