I personally don't care what "technology" people care to take with them or leave behind when they venture into the wilderness. Having said that there is one thing above all that is essential to take. Common sense! Not informing someone of a basic trip plan and latest possible return time totally defies common sense.
I certainly hope that you don't have too many people on this Earth that need to either depend on you or love you. Because if you do, you sure are gambling with letting them down in a big way.
Greetings all...I am quite surprised to see all the cryptic responses to this topic. I won't get in to some cases where cel/sat or other available forms of communications from "OUT THERE" have saved lives or helped those who ran into trouble along the way....I value life and the outdoor experiences most of us share and seek. We are fortunate to live in a corner of the world where outdoor experiences are all around us. I only hope that those of you who are opposed to using the tools available dont ever need one......Travel safe...Cheers Al
I'm not opposed to using SAT phones when the situation warrants them. I resent the implication that they are required equipment and think that the frivolous use of them is extravagant.
