Has anybody even seen a warden using one of the backcountry cabins? The Rocky River station looks like no one's been there in many years. There isn't even any horse dung in the corrals.

Pair with horses at Helmet Falls Camp Ground last August (Kootenay NP). They stayed in the cabin. My son spoke with them (I was filtering water) and they didn't ask for a permit, I think they might have asked him about if we had seen any bears. Well used trail mind you.

You won't see wardens on horseback anymore in Jasper. Thanks to these last cuts the horses have ridden off into history. The backcountry will now be patrolled either by helicopter or by quad. There are no more horses left in Jasper. The North and South boundary trails have been decommissioned as well as Maligne Pass and numerous other ones. There were only two wardens patrolling on horseback last year, one on the north and the other to the south. They kept the trails open, now they are done. Now it's up to the outfitters to keep these trails alive, but Parks has made it too expensive to operate in the park, so they are heading for Willmore and other eastern slope destinations. No more bridges will be replaced in Jasper. To me this is a very sad state of affairs.

I agree Lobo, this is very sad news indeed. I would like to someday do both the North and South Boundary trails and even Maligne Pass as part of the GDT but I fear these trails will be overgrown, out of shape by the time I can do them. And perhaps more of an ordeal than they would be otherwise i.e. river crossings and routefinding. Sad day indeed. I wonder what the situation is like in Banff, Kootenay, or Yoho parks. Do you know if they are going to keep the back-country warden cabins or do you think they will dismantle and remove them as well?

I was checked once at Egypt Lake, but the other few times I've crossed anyone, they haven't asked for my permit.
I met a couple guys staying at Fish Lake cabin, and one once at Helmet Falls.

Wardens checked my permits only twice: at Egypt Lake CG (Aug, 2007) and Helmet Falls CG (July 2008). These two places have warden cabins close by. Haven't seen wardens anywhere else since then.

Finally stopping that crazy suffering that is ice, climbing to concentrate on great ski tours!

North Boundary will be impassable without the big bridge. What a shame.
