I'm quite happy with mid-range stuff.
My Merrell boots were something like $150-200 a few years ago. Not cheap, but not top-of-the-line expensive either. Super comfortable, and they've lasted a long time. Well worth it as far as I'm concerned. I think I'm about due for a new pair of boots pretty soon, and I won't hesitate to go Merrell again.
My Osprey packs are great. A Stratos 34 for day hiking that was something like $150 is the bees knees as far as I'm concerned. An Atmos 50, at around $250 for overnights/weekends is excellent as well, though admittedly I'm debating selling it for something a little larger. The Stratos is big enough to use for an overnight trip 3 seasons of the year, and the Atmos isn't quite big enough for my winter kit for a weekend, which is something I'd like to get into. Based on my experience with my Osprey stuff, I see no reason to shell out $400+ on an Arcteryx or similar bag. Heck, I'll probably go for something cheaper than what I had(MEC brand, possibly Gregory) simply because I don't get out for multi-night trips often enough to justify a large expense on a bag.
For what I do and my budget, mid-range stuff is usually great. As somebody else mentioned, once you get out of the Canadian Tire level stuff, the price for features ratio goes down as you spend more money, at least in my eyes. |

Yikes!! The "King" in DSLR's is the Nikon D3X. Only in America do they consider the 1ds at the top of the heap... but then, in America they bow down to Lord Bog.
