While we're on the subject, on other forums I can jump to the first unread post, but on this one it goes to the most recent post, which means I have to scroll up (and sometimes back a page) to see what else has been posted since the last time I visited. Is this something that bothers anyone else?

I like the jump to first unread post feature on other sites. It works very well and is convenient. A good time saver.

How does that feature work? Does it track posts in each thread to the user that is looking at it?

I guess it must. On the forums I've been on that has this, folders with updated threads have a different colour. Updated threads have a coloured icon to the left of the thread name. You click on the icon and it takes you to your first unread posting. And you can click on a link to "mark all forums read", which is extremely useful on a forum discussing intellectual issues when you really really really don't want to go back to a particular thread. You can just pretend that you didn't see that what's his name has responded to whoever it was who responded to some comment you wish you hadn't read in the first place. Not a problem on this forum, where everyone is so positive.

Don't they have pulldown menus for forum programs that let you choose your features? Or is there actual programming involved?

I don't know if this has been addressed somewhere else, but on another forum, there's an option where you can get email notification every time someone posts to a topic that you wish to follow. That way you don't have to keep checking the site wondering if there are responses. I think that's a pretty groovy feature.
