Dave, awesome job today on the Vanfondo. Amazing day of riding through downtown with great people, fantastic weather, and even a police escort! (the MC was questionable , though). ...and to think that all associated costs for policing, staging, etc was paid for privately, and money raised went to charity. Very cool. Screw the nay-sayers, awesome event!
seriously? nobody here 'naysay'ed the event. it was a platform to discuss a relevant issue. why is that so difficult?
Sounds like a great day!
Correct. They didn't naysay the event, just the fact it was posted in the first place. Had it not been posted here, myself and the 5 guys I invited likely would not have heard of it. Because the CT rules were broken, 6 guys (maybe more that I'm not aware of) had a great day out on the bike and helped out a bit with a great charitable organization. Seriously. |

I attended this event as well and only found out about it through ClubTread.
It was well organized with a lot of volunteers and police helping keep the ride running smooth and safe - and all for a great cause. |

Although in this case it was the former...my point was that Norona commonly does the latter also. |

Congratulations, Dave, for your part in raising funds for Canuck Place. Was there really 1,400 cyclists who particpated? Any idea of how much money was raised? The minimum entry fee was $10. Was the entire entry fee donated to Canuck Place? Comor's Paul Player was interviewed by the Georgia Straight, and states that all entry fees are donated to Canuck Place/Hospice. Paul says Comor chose the VanFondo as a vehicle to mark Comor's entry into the bicycling retailing market, instead of using a traditional "grand opening" retailing promotion. Registration packages were required to be picked up at Comor retail locations, and included a 20% off coupon off regular priced merchandise.
The VanFondo appears to be primarily a retailing strategy to promote Comor's bicycling business. The Canuck Place/Hospice fund raising seems to be secondary.
The event site, www.vanfondo.com, has a single paragraph describing its association with Canuck Place. There is no link provided to Canuck Place, www.canuckplace.org, to explain in detail what good works it does.
"Where does my money go? Entry into the VanFondo is by a minimum $10 suggested donation to Canuck Place – Children’s Hospice. Canuck Place provides specialized pediatric palliative care for children living with a life-threatening illness and support for their families throughout British Columbia."
Comor's relationship to Canuck Place seems to be superficial, compared to say, Innovative Fitness' Adventure Challenge, which incorporates fund raising pledges and goals for its event participants.
www.adventurechallenge.ca/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.adventurechallenge.ca/
For 2011, IF claims it raised $285,000 for Canuck Place. For 2012, IF has set its goal to raise, $300,000. It's not clear if Comor requested a charitable tax writeoff/credit for its donation. IF includes a prominent link to Canuck Place on its web site banner.
Canuck Place Childrens Hospice(CPCH) solicits event organizers to raise funds for it, and has some vetting process application which Comor seems to have passed. www.canuckplace.org/about/overview/faqs/events.php" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.canuckplace.org/about/overview/faqs/events.php
CPCH has requirements of its fund raising partners:
"Independent Special Events, or third-party fundraisers, are a very important component of the fundraising activities of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH). Beyond the funds raised, these events create awareness and bring new support to the Hospice. In order to ensure Independent Special Events have a positive impact on the public image of Canuck Place, the following policies must be followed:"
Comor appears to have raised some funds, but as to bringing greater awareness, support, and improving CPCH's public image, it seems there is room for improvement.

Maybe as far as the website goes, you may be right, but the website isn't the only way awareness is created.
I was there, listening to that MC guy talk (nonstop, lol) about the cause. If I wasn't "aware" about why I was there, I certainly became "aware".
Also, at every registration booth and table with free snacks, etc, there was a sign and a donation bin increasing my "awareness" and increasing opportunity for fund-raising.
Don't knock it until you try it, tzoflier. |

Thanks for those that attended, we raised a ton of money and at the same time has a ton of fun and so did the riders. We have been inundated with e-mails, tweets and phone calls of the ride, saying that there should be more!!! Well for those that did attend, I expect to see you out for the SUP Event June 9th! Same Theme but this time surf boards, beers and food all for a great cause!
Georgia Straight Article! Thanks to Charlie Smith the editor of the Straight who I know well, not only did he ride but he shot video and heckled me, awesome!

Well this is a specious argument if I've ever seen one. The money still goes to cancer research, no?
They are doing what every shitty company does: using charity for tax breaks and image improvement. Just because a shitty company is doing that with an event does not disqualify the value of the event.

Then perhaps the response is better suited to those threads since it is fairly cynical to bring up here. |
