That was the final straw that nudged me to get it done with.

I also signed up for a 3rd party SMTP relay service and have done some testing with it and it seems to work great. Will be using that for the CT mail in the future as well. Stay tuned, I plan to try and migrate this stuff this week.

Right now I'm copying the hundreds of thousands of photos over to the other server. Looks like my current provider is going to screw me a good $100 in bandwidth to do that as well but at least I'll be done with them.

Your patience is appreciated!

Really appreciate all that you do for this site and its members, Jim. One question for you. I am guilty of uploading my pictures full size...would you prefer people resize their pictures before uploading?

I asked that before also and the software that is used reduces the size of the picture before it displays them as part of your report. The more it has to reduce may take a bit longer to do but I found it to be pretty fast no matter what size pictures from most cameras.
If you click on one of your picture thumbnails to enlarge it and then right click it to save it to your computer you will see it is reduced down to a few hundred KBs. when you check it's size when back on your computer.

Where as when you originally sent it or uploaded it from your computer it may have been anywhere from 1MB. to 5 or more MBs. in size. Reducing your pictures first I don't think will make much difference. Time uploading reports and pictures is bandwidth used and bandwidth cost money but this picture tool seems to be very fast and efficient so I don't think the size of your pictures would make that much difference if you reduced them first.
Of course Jim would have to have the final say on this since I don't know what services he is using to run this forum.

If he did not have this type of software to do this then it would cost him a fortune in hard drives to provide the thousands of pictures that have been uploaded to CT.

When you create a TR and upload your pics you usually use the side by side green up arrows button tool and it allows you to add many pics of any size and I found it is quite fast to upload alot of pics at one time.

Before they got that tool added and I say they because Jim has more then just himself running this, you had to use the light yellow button on the left side of the green arrows button to upload your pictures.
To use this tool to upload pictures was a huge chor especially if uploading a lot of them.
It also would reduce their size but was very slow in doing it and only one pic could be submitted at a time. Also it had a size limit of 1024 KBs. and if your picture was close to that size the longer it would take to reduce it. If the picture was smaller it would reduce and add much faster. Now that tool will only upload pictures less than 1000 KBs. So if you use this tool it is much better to reduce your pics down to around 500 kbs. or less.
Because this tool is so slow at reducing pictues it uses more bandwidth.

There were several nights in the past before Jim added that new feature to upload multiple pictures at a time where the double green arrow is, that I spent all night posting a trip report and many times went to work Monday morning with no sleep or very little sleep from waiting for the pain and time consuming way this forum worked before.

It was especially fun when after hours of work you finally finished and wanted to preview one last time before posting the report and the darn thing dissappeared, urr.
So then had to start all over again and that is when I learned to do most of the text on Microsoft Word first and copy and paste it here after on long reports.

Jim and company have much improved it from the way it was.

Concur with WAlly, the multiple upload works great and takes any pictures of any size and reduces them to less than 200 k in size; uploading time takes longer with larger photos.

To upload pictures one at a time was a pain; to loose a whole lot of photos due to some computer crash before posting, was too much.

I also have learned to copy and past sections of my TR's temporarily to a word file and photos as I compile the report on the screen in CT.

Sometimes if you loose photos unsaved on CT due to a crash, one thing I have done is make note of the photo # of the next upload I do. I copy to make clones of this number, and then edit to change the number sequence backwards. Photos are still there, it is the # id you need to put in to bring those photos into view.

I could rent 7 new dedicated servers with unmetered / unlimited bandwidth for 800/mnth. I don't know what provider you are/were currently using but that sounds expensive as hell.

Hummm, good plan, you do that and create a forum so we have another one when this gets busy or people post unwanted comments. That would be .

Thanks for the info. Wally. I do use the bulk uploader (much easier) and learned pretty quick to save my reports elsewhere as I write them...lost one or two when I first joined.

Uniserve. And they are ripping me blind. They upped my charges with no notice. $2.25/GB for anything over 10GB. Its BS. I've been so busy I haven't had time to do anything about it so have been sucking it up for a while now. But now I've finally started getting around to getting things moved. The next doesn't have a charge for upstream traffic and although I still pay for bandwidth, it is a lot less expensive. I'm still working out some of the kinks getting this ported over. Almost there.....
