| Really enjoyed the report Karl, I don't even have a visa, so there's little chance of ever doing this hike myself. |

| Excellent photos and commentary - thanks for posting; I won't need to post any now! We were up there just 2 days before you and had the same amazing weather. Also did the drive to the Johnston Observatory and Windy Ridge, doing a bit of a hike at the latter. It is a beautiful and fascinating area. The climb was tough - took us 9 hours - those boulders and ash! A bonus was seeing Mt. Adams up close - it's on the list for next year! |

| Great TR, Karl! Very interesting way to start the trip with a dream (especially after watching Inception...) Have to add this one on my to-do list. |

| Congrats on the achievement! Looks like you guys had a great day for it. Was it hard to get a climbing pass or do you just have to reserve early? |

What an achievement, Karl! I like your pictures from the hike/scramble to the top a lot. You were very lucky to have a clear sky for this adventure. I was there in 2008. Didn´t make it to the top, though. But I did a lot of hiking in the vicinity of Mt.St.Helens. It was adventurous and beautiful, too. But probably not as exciting as your hike to the summit!!! For those who are interested in tons of (colourful fall-) pictures taken during my hikes try this: http://www.eckhard-vogt.com/1024/frameset_1024.html >>pictures >>travel >>usa 01 >>washington state >>mt.st.helens |

another fantastic TR karl - this has been on my bucket list for 2 years now, and will have to wait one more...
great to see the area recovering the way it is, with this being an excellent opportunity to see nature reestablishing itself - glaciers forming, veg returning...

Awesome Trip Report, Karl. I rememeber the eruption well. I have never seen Mt St Helens. I've driven past in the clouds many times and wondered what it looks like. Thanks for the pictures.

OMG!! Gifford Pinchot!! Way cool! He's our ol homeboy from PA in the US. He was the best gov we ever had. You know we have a FREE park within 25 miles of every Pennsylvanian?
I like his thoughts that put the stewards in check of the forest lands. It's not the land of the stewards. Too many times restrictions are imposed by the people in charge and they forget that they are stewards of OUR lands and it isn't their land!!

Ya shook loose some ol cobwebs here seeing his name out west. I never knew!!! wow!! -------------------------------------------------------------------
Way cool! Another laurel in your crown! right from the opening shot? I am stoked!! and jealous..... a trip of a lifetime. wow!
So, did anyone get right up to the gases spewing out? That's where I would go. the very edge of the vent hole? Can you go to it? |

Yes, you have to reserve early. February 1 was opening day for climbing passes, you have to apply within a few days to reserve the day you want to climb, as there is a small limit of people allowed per day.

Eckhard... Thank you. I see there is a vast network of trails around the mountain which will take days to cover. On my next visit, I would like to do the trails on the north side, that could be a while though.
