No kidding! I think what saved me is the bear noticed me first and turned and ran just when I looked up...he was only a few feet in front of me. I was lucky, he could have just reached up and taken me out...but there were 3 more people behind me, we figure he spooked and ran when he saw I was coming at him and not stopping. A few minutes later when we were all in the canoe and approaching shore to see if it was still around (thinking it was a black bear at that point) it bluff charged us, veering off just before it hit the water. Later he came back out and ate lily pad roots for an hour while ignoring us and the 11 year old's wailing. Once he got to the other side of the lake we high tailed it out of there.

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback and stories! I am actually feeling a bit reassured and will try not to be so twitchy from now on! Off to Whistler for the long weekend.

This may be obvious to some, but bear caches for food - have only seen the ones at Kwai Lake that looked like metal lockers at ground level. I know there are some that are like platforms accessed by ladder too. Should our food & toiletries etc be in a proper bear canister like the ones I've seen in MEC or is a well sealed dry bag etc OK? I assume at busy sites with lockers, people share?

Thanks again

Yes, people share the bear caches...if you're going somewhere without caches, take rope with you... you can throw it over a high branch and pull your food, and anything else that has a scent, up high. Try to get it up 15 feet or so. I've only ever used dry bags. The sealed cans are if you are going to be somewhere where you can't cache or hang your food.

... " paranoia will destroy ya..." . can't understand why the Brit- Gov't banned canadian
Saskatoon berry jam, as " unsafe". The royalty now goes without.

...so, leave the bear bells at home, the dogs too, or leash them. I don't like noise, and enjoy encounters with
island bears, always looking for a new " bear tale ".

You are more likely to fall of a cliff talking on a cell. Amazing , I've taken several Euro's on backcountry hikes and have to ask them to switch these things off for the whole trip.

I just want to feel and taste the world around me out there.
Enjoy. And dress and plan for our whacky moods of nature.
