quote: If you don't go at a time where you can do the shelf around Owen because of tides, I'd just skip over Thrasher. Its a waste of time climbing down and then climbing up the next day.
I remember doing the section from the start of the trail, skipping past thrasher, and going right to camper. We had left in the afternoon and arrived at around 9pm. It was a long day for me as I had zero sleep the night before because of food poisoning. I made it in about 7hrs. I think it would take most between 6-8hrs. Good lord, just looked at my TR and I was up for 42hrs straight. Slept well that night.
If you can leave earlier in the morning, going all the way there isn't a bad idea. And be careful what you eat for dinner the night before. LOL
I second this advice. We did the WCT in 2004. We went on stand-by so we had no choice as to start times and favourable tides. We got on the trail around 11am-ish (after the morning briefing). When we got to the spur trail to Thrasher we looked at the tide table to see if we could get around Owen Point the following morning and discovered we couldn't. We didn't want to go all the way down and then all the way back up so we continued on to Camper.
It was the longest hiking day of my life (not in kms or in time, just that it felt the longest). It took us 45 min to do km 67. We arrived around 9pm. It also didn't help that we were carrying very heavy loads for our first day (fresh food for dinner) and that we had had almost no sleep the night before due to arriving into the Port Renfrew campground around 1am, drunk idiots yelling and slamming car doors all night, and then waking up at 6am to go get in line for stand-by.
If you can plan it right with the tides Thrasher is a good option. If you are pressing on to Camper, wear earplugs the night before! |

Thank you for your opinions. I would really like to see Owen point, but the low tide is really early:
2006-07-22 (Saturday) Time Height PDT (m) (ft) 06:10 0.4 1.3 12:53 2.2 7.2 16:45 1.8 5.9 23:12 3.1 10.2
Given that Owen Point should be hiked at below 0.8m, what time should we leave Thraser Cove at?

I think Owen Point should be hiked at below 1.8m, not 0.8m

| When we left, we started a little after the low tide point and had no problems. |
