That one bear picture, first one from day three, looks like he's 2 seconds from breaking into a gallop towards you! At any point did you ever feel seriously threatened? I ordered the book "Along the Dempster" and have every intention of going there next summer to backpack both in the Tombstones and further north. Hopefully I can persuade some club treaders to join me up there when the time comes

Yea I felt seriously threatened. As I mentioned both sows pictured charged us and one was within 15 feet. The camp crashing bear may have been worse; he slapped my back pack around right next to my tent before he collapsed the tent on the guy next to me and ripped the rain fly off the tent next to him.

I drove the dempster in 2000 and hiked in the Ogilvies and the Richardsons. The trip is much better with company as you can see the country is full of wildlife and you will most likely face a close range grizzly.

Yeah that's right, now I remember reading that from before. I know from recent experience that a gun doesn't guarantee your safety against a bear, but still, if I were to do your trip I would be packing some pretty serious hardware. I wouldn't use it unless absolutely neccesary, not even for warning shots, but it sounds you had some very close calls.... in fact if I were to do that trip in a larger group I would be tempted to get people to take shifts staying up guarding the tents through the night. It is after all the land of the midnight sun.

Still though I would love the opportunity to observe grizzlies and caribou in their natural habitat, what an experience... I hope I get my chance...

What an amazing adventure! I missed it first time around too so am glad to see it resurface again. You have some very impressive wildlife shots and I enjoyed reading your story.
This photo takes my breath away.

Which piece was added to cause this thread to get bumped? The Arctic Chalet thing?

I'm tentatively planning a weeklong trip in Gates of the Arctic in september - which is latitude-equivalent to Ivvavik Park but over on the Alaska side.
