Actually that'd be great. A copy of the newspaper, even as a loan, when can I have it?

Sure. I'm heading home tomorrow, and will dig it out. You'll have to provide an address for me though. And I reserve the right not to find it right away (my storage room is a mess).

I'm still not sure what it proves though, other than it was published.

No worries Backroader, it'll be good enough for me. Dont be too long though, the anticipation is killing me.

P.S. You've got mail.

Seriously, it is exactly the same story. Just in paper form. I have tweaked it a bit, in seven years, but nothing major like "oh, let's take this place where it says "seven days" and put "four days" instead.

Hey Backroader - I read the whole damn thing. And irregardless, I believe you did the trip in four days, and I will go buy my copy of Backroads Mapbook when I wear my current copy out (should be sometime next year).

What blows me away about this whole discussion is:

a) there is no consideration given to differences in tripping speeds.

b) there is little recognition of the possibility that portages change every year.

c) there is no mention given to possibilities of one party being experienced and fast, and another party being inexperienced and not fast.

d) calling someone a liar in public is libelous - edited and striked to point out that no-one called anyone else a liar.

And as far as Backroader being a 'respected' individual or not - we are ALL respected individuals. Until proven otherwise.

IMO. Sorry Monster.

Standing up for what you believe in is an honorable pastime Blackfly and I take no offense what so ever from your intention to stand up for what you believe in. I have never used the word ‘liar’, only you and Backroader have. Lets say instead that I perceive some embellishment so as to minimize the melodrama in this thread. In the end all will be sorted out when I receive the newspaper with the 'original' trip report. After all, it was posted here "for Monster".

Yes, you're absolutely right. I did pick up that term inadvertantly - and will edit my post accordingly. My apologies for my part of the melodrama. Let's all shake hands and have a cold one.

Thank you for the edit Blackfly, and thank you for completely removing the personal comments. I think we are all adults here and can maintain a certain level of civility, even during arguments.

The tendency to take socializing in online forums far too personally or seriously is not an uncommon occurrence, but one that can and should be avoided. Using this thread as an example, I’ve done my best to let Backroader know that I think he’s a decent person even though I question a detail of his, and I’ll grant that in some cases my choice of words could make anyone feel uncomfortable but by the time you weighed in with some hostility, he and I had already come to an agreement.

I have never heard truer words spoken than those of the most eloquent writer of all time and so long ago now. I do my best to live my life by them even while knowing that failures are ultimately inevitable.

“This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell; my blessing season this in thee!”
