Hi, Does Anyone have information on Green Mountain in the Nanaimo Lakes area of Vancouver Island? Interested in Making the trek, but have found limited information thus far.

Thanks in advance,

It seems to be a popular destination spot for tours. I suspect for that reason that the trail will be somewhat busy. From what I could see, it looks like an outing that would be a full day if you were to take in all the sites and take a slow pace - at least that's what the tour seems to portray. I checked my topo map for the area and it looks like Green Mountain is at 1465m. It looks like you can gain access to the area by following the Nanaimo River Road past three of the lakes. You'll then want to hang a left on Br K (left after the third lake and crossing the Nanaimo River. It then looks like several of the next turns will get you to the trailhead (a gate)? through the road K 30. It also looks like there is an old ski lodge there and also supports activities such as skiing, hiking, and biking. It looks like the Nanaimo Lakes area and Green Mountain borders the Greater Nanaimo Watershed. That's about all the info I can find...

Thanks for the info, We plan on making the trip this weekend before the snow sets in. Nothing beats a crisp fall hike. If anyone could add to this info it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Champ

I can't add anything useful, but I can add that I grew up not too far from there and I remember skiing Green Mountain (a rope tow I think). I remember the drive up as being pretty scarey. But then, I was about 8 years old riding in the back of an open pick up truck! Have fun -- I would love to hear all about it when you return.

How was Green Mountain?

To get there, make sure you take K-15 from Nanaimo Lakes Road. K-15 will eventually split into K-30 and an unmarked road. Take K-30.

We parked at the base of the old Green Mountain ski access road, and prepared to head up. All the information I could find about the hike said 5 Hours round trip. It took us 1hr to reach the old ski lodge, although we didn't follow the road the whole way. We decided snaking up the mountain through a series of switchbacks may make for an easier hike, but we wanted to sweat a little. Straight up we went.

The View was spectacular on the way up, and the meadows were pleantifull and beautiful.

Once we reached the old ski lodge we realized it had seen better day's. This place must have been awesome in it's time. 4 story "A" frame structure with lots of bunks, a large kitchen and common area.

Ultimatly we decided we'd rather sleep inside the lodge with it's large fireplace than outside in tents. We cleaned up the place a little and despite the draft the fireplace kept us warm all night.

We cooked up some breakfast in the morning and headed back down. That took about 40 minutes.

We could have hiked further to the summit of green mountain but decided to head back, as the Nanaimo Lakes Gate closes at 2:30pm in the winter. We figure to hit the summit from the lodge was probably a good hour.

Although this hike is not very difficult, the meadows, the valley below and the fact we saw no other hikers made this a very enjoyable adventure.

Do yourself a favour and check it out sometime.

Happy Hiking!

This is a nice write-up on one of my favorite places. I sure wish i would have gotten a chance to see the cabin while it was still standing. Only rubble from the chimney remains. Great area with an interesting history. I always like hearing old stories from older locals about when it was a ski resort.

I called Timberwest about access up there for the weekend and i was told 'no public access past the 1st lake campsite.'
Is this the norm? I wanted to get a bit of spring touring up there, and it's a bit of a pain in the ass with all this privately held foresty land around nanaimo. I see you have been up there a bit, any luck this year?

Always been such a pain to get anywhere up there, unless you take a quad...
