Mount Edgar is another one of the attainable peaks of the Paleface Valley, which like the others, is becoming more distant as the roads grow over. On a driving trip to Chilliwack Lake, Edgar will appear on the horizon as you near the Lindeman trail. My friend Bob see's the mountain whenever it's clear, and has been a bit obsessed with getting up there.
Last October, we drove along Chilliwack Lake, past the Paleface road, then parked at the start of a trail he had been scoping out. I'm going to add a map later to give a better idea, basically it's a random Lucky beer can flagged to a tree on the driver's side.
Hike up through the old cut for 20 mins to beginning of forest.
Steep mossy forest provides an open path straight upwards for a good distance, then a section of downed logs with thick branchy crap, which ends at a scenic lookout. From here it's possible to continue on in open forest up to the ridgeline. A good goat trail makes you feel right on track as it takes you to the summit of Peak 6044.
Mount Edgar as seen from 6044.
Last Fall.
The highest peak on the left is Edgar, it shares a beautiful hanging basin with a couple sub summits. We tried to ascend the one on the right directly, but were foiled by technical terrain and time...
Fast forward to August 2012 and we were back, well prepared for round two. Some better route finding enabled us to avoid most of the shitty section, only 1 hour to the lookout.

Last time through I'd tied a flag every hundred metres or so, not intervisible, but you will find them if you go the right way
Within three hours the top of Peak 6044 was reached. After a short break we hiked down to the "goat highway" ridge, then across boulder fields to a rocky bowl. Some exploring towards the sound of water, tempted us down into a sketchy gully. I had to wait patiently maybe 10 mins for Bob to get clear of any rolling rocks, helmets would have been wise.
Zoom shot.
Once out of the gully, we curled around a buttress, crossed a wide basin of boulders to ascend steep heather up to a nice bench. Hiking through the hanging basin created by the trio of peaks, a mountain stream rewarded us with plenty of fresh water.

Some meadows.
The final hike to the top was easy, our total time up was 5.5hrs. Bob built a little cairn, and we relaxed for maybe an hour on the enjoyable summit area.

Thompson Peak behind me.
Mount Daly at left, showing old road access, and Dru's route.
On the way back, a choice was made to head up and over to the next basin.
Scramble up to top left of pic, look for flag.
Will give Wildman some credit here for providing us with some quality tips, and possibly tying the old flags
Back at 6044 I snapped a couple portraits of Edgar. Later on I'm going to mark out the route on one of these.

The way the flags were set out made for interesting route finding, between us we're essentially a couple of trail detectives. In fact we did such a good job, tracing the path so exactly that we went straight through the old burn (ouch). Our total time round trip was 11.5 hrs, time to celebrate with beer on ice!

Right on - both the trip report and route finding .
I'll be looking forward to a map as I hope to hit this one sometime to finish off my explorations of this area.

Overview, beer can with flag marks the start, will be there but hard to spot.
On return this is the way to go, looks wrong until you get higher up.
Shows both ways we went. |

The 2 dogs stayed behind? I'm guessing they don't tolerate the heat too well with their thick coats, especially Bob's dog. |

We weren't sure what kind of scrambling would take place, even brought crampons along. That combined with possible lack of water, made us leave the canines behind for this one. |

| This looks like a good way to go if you can't get up the road. It sure was fast and easy coming across the snow below the east ridge in the spring but we could drive all the way to the road end in Robin's truck back then. |
