We hiked Cheam last Saturday evening(July 28th).

The snow wasn't that bad just small patches of it left mainly on the flat spots.

Here are a couple pictures.

We had hoped to wait until the clouds burned off to get a view, so we didn't start hiking until about 4:30pm. No luck with the view, but it is neat to be above the clouds. There were lots of wildflowers too.

The road was the same - bumpy with cross ditches and lose rock near the top. Some small SUV's were parked up top like a Rav 4 etc.

It's nice to know the snow wasn't that bad. Stu and I are thinking about going up there sometime this weekend. Do you think that crampons and ice axe are overkill?

Happy trails,
Lynn

Nicely done. Climbing above the sea of clouds always feels like you are flying to me.

I have been wanting to do this hike for quite some time. My issue is that I have a yaris. How far could I make it in a short wheel base car? How much longer would I have to walk?

Thanks for the report! I am also planning on heading up there this weekend, so it's good to see where the snow is at.

Nice report, that neck of the woods is so beautiful. I've been to the top of Cheam once, and it was amazing when the clouds were rolling in as we had to walk through them and above them.

I don't think you want to beat your Yaris up, my guess from your car put in about 5 to 6 km walk where I would park it. I did that once several years ago, just before the first cross-ditch, through walking up the road stopped short of the parking lot by a 1/2 km and walked around that local area.

So I am guessing then I would be able to drive up until the chipmunck cr fsr then park?

Yes, a good place to park would be near the gravel pit at the junction before you turn up on the right fork after crossing over the tributary creek. Depending on your pace, might take you a good 2 hours to reach the parking lot on foot. Perhaps someone will give you a lift.

I agree with Karvitk, If you park at gravel pit its going to be a long walk up. The road is in the roughest shape Ive seen it yet. On a possitive note: you might see some wildlife on your additional hike up! We saw a grouse with two chicks at the start of the hike.

It is overkill now. I went up yesterday Aug 1st and it was clear all the way with maybe two or three small snow patches. Almost all the wildflowers are out as well.

You'll have to leave it around the entrance to Chipmunk FSR from Bench FSR. From there it's 10km to the trailhead and rise from sea level to 4700 feet. I don't think it's something to enjoy. You'd be much happier renting the cheapest SUV or truck you can find for a day. All you need is more clearance. 4wd isn't really necessary, unless road changed much from last year.

Absolutely. And I could get a unicorn through dandelion fields without damage.

I am sure if you posted you wanted to do this hike in the event section, others would want to do it too, likely someone with a vehicle to get you up there. I'd never do that walk up such a long slog, and bikers all over to top it off.

Ran into a couple guys up there this morning who had done the walk up with overnight gear. I was impressed, that really is a slog! Especially in yesterday's blazing sun!
