Wanted to do a hike that wasn't weather dependent for the view since it is so unsettled here. Using the backroad map book i found Harrop trail to Mill lake in the Harrop Proctor Community Forest. Got to the trailhead around 9:20 after 1hr 45min drive from Rossland.
Trailhead sign

Overall the trail was in good shape, mostly dry and when wet it was easily avoided. On the not so good side the trail wasn't well marked. I lost it a few times but found it again quickly. Also between ~3.5km & 6.5km there was a lot of deadfall. At 6.5km there was active logging that was near impossible to cross so i skirted down to the logging road.
At the end of the road the trail started up again and had most of the deadfall removed. As you can see from the map below i didn't quite make the lake. I got about 300m from it in 3h45m and the snow got fairly deep and i completely lost the trail. Being solo (and tired) i felt the safest thing was to turn around and try again another day.
It took me 6h15m to go 20k with an elev gain of 1300m. It was 33,000 steps on my pedometer which i have for the Global Corp challenge. The other 1000 was from breakfest etc and normally a 9k run nets me 8000 steps so you can tell this was a bit tougher.

Last but not least some Bridge porn for those who are into that (and i know some of you are)

Neat shots of the bridges there. That BCFS Sign surely has seen better days.
"Mill Lake" made me first think of a very local lake, right in the midst of Abbotsford, B.C.

| Most people are starting from Harrop Low Road now which is at about 1400 m elevation and saves a long - some would say boring - valley grunt. Go to www.bivouac.com for updated beta. You can easily do Lasca Peak in a day. Careful of the much maligned (due to its gross inaccuracy) Backroad map book. |

Bivouac is where i went for the trail description. It still has the original trail that i followed. http://bivouac.com/RoadxPg.asp?RoadxId=4372 I wanted a long hike with lots of elevation gain so it was all good.
Lasca Peak looks like an interesting hike for a later in the season though. From your trip report it looks like i took Harrop Low Rd back down partway. It was in pretty good shape. Seemed like 2wd accessible except for 1 soft spot. |

Thanks, I'll fix it at some point. I think most would prefer the higher start and less distance to the alpine. Some friends of mine hoofed it up Lasca a few weeks ago. Snow was good for walking they reported.
There are plans to extend the trail over ridgelines and down to the next creek (name escapes me) to the north. It would pass fairly close to Lasca then. |
