We hiked the "new" (or original) trail from the Hwy 99 lookout north of Lions Bay yesterday. A huge thank you to the trail builder(s) for a well-defined trail, helpful crossings over blown-down logs and the markers: yellow plastic squares higher up on trees where they can be seen, with reflective smaller squares showing the direction of the trail - you can't get lost even at night. I have never seen anything so beautiful, they sure beat flagging tape!
Reading previous reports on this hike, I believe that much of the credit must go to CT member weedWhacker. Great job! |

There were nine cars in the parking lot yesterday. I don't think I have ever seen more than two.
The trail was built long ago but had overgrown quite badly. I cleaned it up for exercise. Stoked also takes some of the blame. He removed a lot of the larger blowdowns about two years ago.
If you are looking for more of the same, continue up the Hat trail. |

Many thanks for your hard work, Weedwhacker.

WW, was that nine cars of trail users? If so, that's amazing. It's a nice alternative to the relentlessly boring logging road up from LB. I think I must have hiked it a couple of hundred times.
So, there is still some blowdown left from a couple of years back? Or is it fresh this year? |

Stoked: there were no people in the pullout, so I assume they were all hiking. I didn't see anyone on the trail but I never do.
Trail status:
- The TB trail is clear now. There was some fresh blowdowns last winter but I dragged a chainsaw over it earlier this year. It could use a few more switchbacks, but unfortunately I am too lazy.
- The trail from the final TB lookout to Logger Creek lookout could use some chainsaw love (one full day).
- The Hat trail still has a bit of blowdown near 1200m. And it needs more trail markers above 1450m.
- The cabin trail washed out quite badly near the 2nd gulley during last week's rain storms. I rebuilt it yesterday. The cabin is still a work in progress.

I second the thank yous. We went up on Saturday trying (and failing) to find that which shall not be named. Trail was very well cleared and marked. Thanks WW and Stoked.
We followed the intermittent green flagging tape to the second gully, but suspected that there was some recent earth movement since it looked impassable at the point that the tape led to. About 30-40 metres further up there was a passable ledge but it was beyond the comfort level of our party in the still-damp conditions. Could not see any sign of a route on the other side of the gully as the bush was pretty thick at that point.
We had lunch near the gully and returned, re-hanging some of the green tape that had fallen. We had a great nap in the sun at the lookout on the way down.
We only saw one other person all day coming down from tunnel bluffs as we headed up.
We will be back for another try!

Most, if not all, of those cars belonged to our meetup group, 16 hikers in all who really appreciated your work! Some of us were quite interested in Hat Peak when we saw the trail junction and the sign that said 6 km to the peak. We will probably attempt it some time this summer.
Again, many thanks, weedWhacker and Stoked! |

Coastal: Did you find the correct trail junction? It is at the 2nd switchback after the meadows. There is a cleared and marked trail to That Which Must Not Be Named. The flagging tape was placed by trippyBambino a few years ago before the trail was built. That route is no longer used.
It sounds like you turned off here:
If so, you should have gone about ten minutes further up the Hat trail to the next switchback: (Crappy picture from March 1, but it shows the signage). |

Watch out for the sow and cub that moved into in the meadows this year.
