I felt like hiking to Thurston today so I reach the TH 9:00 am. Only one vehicle in the parking lot. After 1/2 hour of hiking I see one of the regular parasailers parked on the upper logging road. I figured maybe he got the key but I drove up the road after my hike and found the gate unlocked with no one around. This can't be a good thing, letting the public up there will distroy our beloved trail in no time.

I was happy to see that there is no ice or snow to the rockface after all the rain we had. The ice doesn't start until just after that through the forest to Elk Ridge.

When I get to the campsite, a grouse poses for me:

Then just before Elk mountain proper, a bear leaves his tracks:

I continue onto Thurston. The skies are dark overhead and they sprinkle various forms of precipitation; rain, hail, snow. The snow is soft and wet on the exposed slopes but nice in the forest. I especially love the forest before the cairn on the viewpoint before Thurston. The witches hair makes it seem enchanted.

I continue on a short way past the cairn, the views are covered and I am cold so I head back. When I get to Elk "Camp" I see a beam of darkness in the sky so I take these pictures and yes, the pictures show what I saw. Does anyone know what this beam of darknes might be? I wondered if it was a sun spot or some residue from the aeroplane that passed by. What do you think?

The beam of darkness faded with time so I continued on, the views started to really open up but Thurston still had dark clouds over it. A lovely day of solitude in the mountains. Thank you great mountain for allowing me safe passage.

Happy trails,
Lynn

Cool Lynn.

You solved the mystery before anyone else did. A very nice trip, I can almost do the same. See the mountain, the sun ,and blue skies... and they call ...

I saw one of those once. I told my companion that it was the International Date Line, and it'd got caught on something

Beautiful clear pictures and helpful update! Interesting about those beams and thanks for posting the link. I'm heading up there tomorrow with a group of 22 (yes 22!) college and university students. Should be fun.

Nice photo of the grouse and beard lichen on the tree trunk. Never seen black colored contrails before.

very cool, have never seen a beam of darkness before. Are you sure its not pointing the way to some evil doers lair?
