Hello,

I was wondering what trail conditions are like in k-country or banff. has anybody seen anything that looks snow free (or packed) enough to hike?

That's what I'm wondering too. Most of front range mountains was in shape last weekend, but the recent system has dumped 20cm+ snow on higher elevation.... Probably Yates Mountain (Barrier Lake Lookout) would be in shape now, but I'm not sure.. Because the temperature also drop below freezing, I would say doing a snowshoeing / skiing trip further west is a better choice for this weekend.

Barrier Lake Lookout was snow free last weekend when i did it. I also did Bull creek hills(located in highwood) 2 weeks ago and it was in good shape

There was lots of new snow this week, but it's melting fast. You can use these cams to give you an idea:

Good early season strategy is to check websites of outdoor clubs to see where they are going and then hike the same trail sometime after. For example, a large CORA group will hike Aylmer Lookout Trail on Sunday. Me and my friend will likely do it a few hours later and let the group break a nice trail for us

Added: According to Banff Trail Report Aylmer Lookout is in fair condition

I did moose mountain this morning. Some snow still on the trail but you can avoid most of it by walking on the edges. Only post holed about 100 m or so thrpugh knee deep snow. I made it to the false summit. The ridgeline going up to the real summit was completely snow covered with knee deep snow so i decided to turn around as it looked like if you slipped you could go for a pretty good slide. There was one set of tracks going o the top so it looks like some went all the way up.

Tried to get up to Glacier Lake 10 days ago, about 4 km of knee depth post holing on the top of the hill, in the end we ran out of time and had to head back but if you had a full day it would be do-able. We'll probably have made it easier for you!
