It ain't over yet... Monday, we took advantage of the hard freeze and headed to Lake Louise Ski Area to attempt Unity Peak, part of the Pumpkin Traverse. In the parking lot, we met Steven (from this forum). Small world! The weather was gorgeous and the travelling easy. Our plan was to climb the slopes leading to the north-west ridge. Reports indicated that these slopes had slid earlier in the season and were therefore less loaded. As we reached the bottom of the slopes, the snowpack was still very hard so we ditched the skis and put the crampons on. The slope was hard but as the sun rose, it was obvious that things would get soft. The ridge was good, no problems. We lingered at the summit a little and then descended in fantastic conditions, the snow not too soft. All in all, a very good spring ski trip. |

It's so nice to meet experienced people like you guys, especially at trail head. What a nice day in the mountains. From your photos the slope doesn't look that steep though. I'm sure it's gentler than the correct ascending gully of Roche Miette. As looking at the map, I'm kinda wondering the possibility of a big traverse (summer time): From Fish Creek parking lot, go towards Baker Lake, then Brachiopod Mountain -> Anthozoan Mountain -> Heather Ridge, then descent to Redoubt Lake, follow the reverse of Pumpkin Traverse described in Summits and Icefields, ascending Unity Peak from east ridge, then traverse to Purple Peak, then Lipalian Mountain, descend the north slope and Larch Chair Lift to Temple Lodge, then back to car. Yeah it would be a 14+ hours day, but you can tick off 6 summits together... Not quite familiar with the area east of Redoubt Mountain. Gonna ascend Redoubt first and take some close photos. |
