Today I set out in search of this elusive trail and was successful. I found it, flagged it and even fell on it a few times. I followed the creek for about 1/2 km always looking for trail markers. I found one on the other side of the creek at this narrow spot which required two awkward jumps!

From here I bashed through the bush then headed up a ridge and shortly found a real trail.

It was littered with deadfall, some quite large. I followed the ridge where the trail disappeared and soon was standing on a ridge looking at McNulty Falls.
[][
I went up for another 1/2 hour hoping for a view of Cheam, but the clouds foiled that idea!
But I did get a look northeast up the Fraser River.

On the way down I found a shelter about 50 meters west of the creek crossing.

To get here drive .7 km on the powerline road, turn right up a road where I put 3 flags on a tree. Just before the second power pole look for flagging and bushwack away!
I played with Google Earth -Pink Line is roughly where I went, -Yellow is wishful thinking!

I'm finished with this report for now

Wow, good find! I failed at this one about two or three times.

The photo uploader might not be back for awhile - any chance you could manually resize and upload a few?

This trail has always interested me, as it was in the older hike 103 books. I never did try to find the trail, thanks for sharing.

I remember finding bits and pieces of this about 10 years ago. The forest is nice.

That's the trail that people kept dying on due to a certain short exposed place along it. I don't think I've ever done the entire former trail so I'd be into doing it as well

Hmm I thought that there was one specific place along that trail that has a seen a few deaths, but I could be mistaken.

Yes, from the Bridal Falls FSR; it used to be the Cheam trail way into the 70's. I'm thankful they found a Southern route so that everyone can enjoy this magical mountain.

Great stuff Mr. B, and thanks for sharing. : ) Does this all mean there was a trail to those lakes at one time, via this route?

I still want to get to those lakes soon, but not looking forward to those nasty roads from the powerhouse.

John, I think this trail was intended as an approach to Cheam. Looking at topo maps, I think the lakes would be enroute. At least this is what I'm hoping for!

Just checked my hiking journal and see an entry for March 13th 1993 for a trip to the lakes via the powerline road. Didn't own a camera back then, but do remember a dense second growth forest up to shoreline, then a view of the tip of Cheam.

Impressed Stu found the North Face trail, I've wondered if it still existed.

Really impressive to find it, enjoyed your pictures. Looks a quick throw-to-gether of a shelter someone put up a while back.

Thanks Tim. Yes, we travelled thru some dense second growth (very skinny trees) on our last trip up there, but were stopped by a deep and steep snow covered creek gulley.
You said you saw the tip of Cheam from the lakes...is it even worth it for us to check it out then? I figured there would be a pretty dramatic view from there.

June 6, 2012

With the nice weather I returned to do some trail chopping. I found two surprises.
As I went to pull off the freeway, I found the access road gated. I didn't think I should park on the shoulder, so I parked on the north parallel Rd. The corner of Halvorsen & Julseth.
From here it's a 15 minute walk to the trailhead.
Second surprise: on the higher road, there's another flagged trail about 5 minutes from the gate. I followed this to a creek crossing and decided to check it out another day.
The bush is a lot thicker now, but after two hours of hacking and chopping it's somewhat easier to see your feet.

Thanks Mr. B for sharing the information.

I would like to team up with one or two climbers who is/are comfortable with solo 50 - 6o degree snow slope and 10-m mid 5 rock and bushwhack through dead fall/devil's club and also have rock-fall awareness. I can meet you either in Vancouver or Chilliwack for the project. Please send me email through CT. The trip should be planed somewhere in June or early July depends on snow condition.

Cheers,
