| I am looking to get a food dehydrator to start making my own backpacking meals and jerky. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy or what to buy around Edmonton? |

I have an American Harvest which I got at London drugs about 10 years ago. Still works well. At the time I likely paid 40 - 50 dollars with the extra trays. I also got the jerky making stuff, always a hit. |

| The best dehydrators are the Excalibur's. Hand made in the USA at a family business, and the fan is mounted at the back instead of bottom so it blows heat across all the shelves evenly. It has large rectangular tray shelves. |

| Does anyone have experience with the smaller 4-tray excaliber model? I dont have the room or need for the 9-tray but I see that the 4-tray one is only 250 watts, which is well below the Nesco FD-80 700 watt model. Which one of those is better? |

A bunch of info on dehydrators has already been posted on the "Backcountry Recipes" section of this forum.
I like Nesco dehydrators. They're cheap and well built.

Me too. Simple and works well year in and year out. |

| I just got the 4-tray excalibur recently and I'm really liking it. The square design is a lot better than round and you can just leave it, no need to switch the trays around etc. I got a great deal on a blemished one on ebay, they are brand new but have some sort of 'mark' when they come off the assembly line. Doesn't bother me and you can't really beat $70. |

I've got a Nesco (from London Drugs). It's excellent and gets quite a bit of use. For jerky, don't bother with the Nesco brand baggies of jerky cure. Too expensive. Just get a $5 bag of curing salt from the grocery store. It will last you years. |

| Look at LEM stainless steel ones (I have 10 tray model IIRC) sold at Bass Pro, I believe Cabelas also carries them. Beats any other hands down by performance and ease of use. Bulky one tho. |
