Turtlehead Peak is in Red Rock Canyon just outside of Las Vegas and I think that it's the most interesting hike in this park! With 2,000 ft [600 m] elevation gain it aids in working up a sweat. The trail is rated as Strenuous with a final elevation of 6,324 ft/1927m.
The trail is intermittent and route finding skills are in order. We were told by the locals the secret is to stay left of the mound, if the scrambling gets too hairy try another route. It was a lot of fun getting off route and knowing, "this can't be right".

Since the hike is only 8km and there was no real scrambling, most CTr's would think of this trail as moderate.

On the way up:

First Surprise: As we gained the saddle we were greeted by lots of fresh snow!

On the way down, I climed things I didn't need to climb, hmm, does this mean I'll be a climber one day?

Second Surprise: As we got back to the car a blizzard rolled in!

Happy trails,
Lynn

Tortuga! The spanish word for turtle. I used to call my wife
a pet name years ago. Tortuga. She met me at the dorm room one day...
"tor-tugah???" Her shmarty pants friend was standing there who interpreted it for her. D'oh! I remind you of a turtle?
Uh-oh..... Took some smooooth talkin to get outta that one...hehe

Great place! I thought you might hit shnow above 6,000 ft. this time of year. Nice pictures! You two look like you had a great day out!
Watch out! Those rocks can be rough as glass shards. Nice view of the Strip off in the distance. If you ever get the chance to come over this way and I am not socked in with snow, (I have no snow gear)
You two would be very welcome to join me on a full day of hiking in
Snow Canyon State Park. I would be honored.
I just went out for three days with Oriana from CT.
But, I also respect the right to privacy and to enjoy one's vacation.
so, either way, the invite is out there.

I like Red Rock Canyon! The 11,000 ft mountains shooting off of the desert floor is awesome! Vegas is fun, too!
Chers! jerry

Good to see you enjoyed your holiday in a hiking area I am not familiar with. Sorry we were too far south to join you. We also experienced hiking in cactus covered snow while at Joshua Tree during the first part of the holiday. Dave will do a report soon.

Looks like a great time. We're heading up that way in April. Will spend a week in Joshua tree and explore Red Rock as well. What I really want to know...did you see some desert birds?

DW2: Looking forward to your reports!

EAK: We saw flocks of energetic birds that sound like they're speaking an actual language rather then churping. Whenever they flew overhead we couldn't help but laugh because to us the birds sounded like they came from another planet, lol.

We also saw a few Western Bluebirds on the La Madre Trail in the same park.

Stu.. your link to this TR Got me here.

I find this a most intriguing place. Neat shot of Lynn in that semi-desert snow.
