I personally would welcome a published Privacy Policy for the website. Most professional websites have them now. You don't need a pack of lawyers to craft one. There's a ton of Privacy Policy boilerplate out there in the ether that it doesn't take much to write one. I'll flesh out the details later.

Hey Anon,

LongShadow has already got this one covered. It's on the same page as the disclaimer.

I think that what is there is just fine.

I guess it's a bit late to ask about the privacy policy when you've been on the site for a while , Your info has already been sold

As for someone hacking the site, no privacy policy is going to protect you from that.

I don't know, perhaps Anon has a point to be concerned...you irritate people long enough with wasted cut and paste bandwidth on a forum and perhaps someone might decide to do something about it. lol

FWIW, I have every confidence in the integrity of Longshadow to keep personal registered info confidential.

What you mean PIPEDA isn't good enough for you?

How much personal information is posted is something each of us has control over (Referring to profile creation and our own posts.) Once you put the information out there for all to see, it's out there. That's our responsiblity as forum users.

I trust in Jim that the email database/IP info isn't being sold off and really that's the extent of what he's really responsible for. Which in and of itself isn't really all that much to worry over is it?

Jimbo,
The Privacy Policy looks fine, thanks. I just couldn't find it in the expected places, like "About Us". In my experience, Privacy Policies are statements that sites like to showcase to demonstrate a commitment to ethics and have a dedicated page and a prominent link to it.

If you look at the "Disclaimer" page, you have no idea that if you scroll to the bottom, there lurks the Privacy Policy.

Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Shadee,
IMO, our personal privacy is constantly being undermined in a 1001 ways, and web sites/administrators are well placed at a junction where a lot of personal info passes by even though one's persona may appear to be "Anon E. Moose".

True enough, and I agree, however, that is not something we have control over, and to maintain the level of privacy of that you speak of (yes I realise it goes deeper than refraining from entering info in a profile), one would have to refrain from using the internet almost entirely.
With just one piece of info (phone number, icq, etc) easily obtained from almost any source, its amazing what a person can find out, even without a last name (I had a stalker some time ago, not related to this site btw, and a friend of mine was easily able to track this person down)

Someone is watching you, the only comfort I can take from that there is probably someone more interesting or worth more money than myself to spend the time chasing.(Bigger fish to catch)

As mentioned above, when it comes to this site, its a level of trust, and I'm sure everyone will back me up when I say Jim has been nothing but professional in his handling of this site and personal information

The privacy policy has been at the bottom of the site for years. I had it as a disclaimer/privacy policy.

I have no intention of giving away anyone's info. I personally despise spam and am fed up with it. Why the heck would I encourage it by giving out more addresses.

Note that if you post your email publicly on the board, a bot might pick it up. So my advice would be to keep it off an actual posting if you are concerned about it.

I thought this was discussed a long time ago.....

Longshadow,
IMO, the Privacy Statement would be easier to find if it was actually referenced as "Privacy Policy/Statement" instead of lumped in with "Disclaimer". It may seem like semantics, but the two "Disclaimer", and "Privacy" are really quite separate and distinct IMO. Most web sites with a Privacy Policy have a direct and dedicated link for this purpose.

I would think that a person who wastes so much time browsing the net to cut and paste here, would have no problems finding it.

Since this is such a big concern for only a few people, perhaps they should invest something into Anonymizer and stop pestering webmasters.
