Sorry to hear about your loss. Wish I had my gun at the time ( not licensed of course) to shoot the bastards. I would let Western Canoe and Kayak in Abbotsford know about this. They have a list that goes out on stolen canoes and kayaks. Good luck.

Hi Pat

I'm also very sorry to hear about your canoe being stolen. What kind of lame ass would steal a canoe? The paddling community can't be very large, I sure hope it turns up.

I'll keep my eyes open. From now on, every red OT Appalachian will be suspect till you recover your boat!

Good luck with your search.

Thanks guys. Please do check out any sightings or news of red Appalachains. Between the RMCC sticker, zap-straps along the inner gunwales, the damaged gunwale, 3 sets of knee pads, etc. it should be easy to identify. My only hope is that I know lots of paddlers.

Ronbo, Thanks, Western was the one place I'd forgotten today.

Blackfly, Was thinking of you recently as I've bought a few new paddles. I don't have them yet, but in the spring, if you're still still shy a blade, I may be able to unload one for cheap. (Free you find my canoe of course!)

Thanks Pat. I'll be bringing my 15' Nova Craft Bob special back with me after Christmas, including all my paddles and drybags, my barrel and Duluth pack, so I should be fine for most gear.

I'm hoping to do a little more paddling next year than what I did this year (I got out only three times for daytrips not including a couple practise sessions in the Outrage). I'm sure you will remember my excellent swimming demonstrations on that day on the Cheakamus! I'd like to do more river daytripping in the playboat, but I'd especially like to do some paddling on the ocean, a few overnighters or multi-day trips. It'd be great to paddle with you again! (if not only to prove to you that I do know how to paddle a body of water, not just swim it)

Again, good luck finding your boat. Did you report it to the police?

A hex upon those thieves. Karma will come around and kick them in the ass.

bf

ps, Pat, perhaps a silver lining to this might be that whoever stole your boat will somehow get it into the hands of a child, who will discover paddling and love the outdoors forever. Small consolation, but maybe some good can come of it. Cheers.

Ouch. Like having a bicycle stolen. No microdot, not locked up? Reminds me that someone stole a cedar strip canoe from a friend who had built it a couple of years ago.

I assume you'll keep an eye on the online Buy&Sell.

Like having a bike stolen, but harder to believe! It's easy to make a bike vanish, but canoes are 16', 75lbs, and not everybody has them. You probably need 2 people, a rack & ropes to steal this thing.

It was my only boat not micro-dotted (but is full of contact info and distinguishing features). I just got it a week ago, and it was not locked, I hadn't really had time to deal with it yet. I'm really mad at myself for that, but mostly at the thiefs.

I've spread the word as wide as I can, and you bet I'll be watching...

Just like the bikes, tools, etc., you'll probably find that your canoe is headed east across the Rockies in a rental van packed with other stolen goods destined for flee markets, pawn shops, etc. where they wont be recognized.

I hope it's covered by your household insurance.

Sorry to hear the news.
I've got a clipper(<6yr old), I know that western canoe and kyak has a hidden serial number on it, anyone know what I can do to prevent the tradgedy that happened to yarnellboat?

I've never heard of a micro dot, what is it and where can it be done?

Any suggestions are good sugestions, and I hope you get it back (or at least get even with whoever took it).

I know how pissed off I'd be if mine got taken.

Thanks.

Gamma,

See my post on the canoe club. The Beavers do micro dotting every year in June. However, having had a boat stolen, I'm not sure the micro dots would help me get it back, can't hurt though.

Yup, for a number of lame reasons (mainly the u-lock-bic pen fiasco, and want ing to lock a boat that was out on my car that night), the canoe was unlocked at the time. People do steal canoes from yards, so lock 'em up.

In the end, I have decided to file an insurance claim, but it still sucks.

I think it's called the Hand's Off program, possible run through the RCMP.

Your canoe, or whatever, gets lots of teeny tiny "micro dots" placed on it, and the dots have your driver's license and/or name. You fill out a sheet that describes the boat, and shows where the dots have been placed. You also get a Hand's Off sticker for the canoe and have some photos taken of you & your boat.

It's part theft prevention, part ID and part maybe your insurance company will give you a break.

That sounds very interesting. I would like to get more information. I searched the RCMP site with "microdot" and "hands off" but couldn't find anything.

I had $10,000 in mt bikes stolen last year and this type of program may be perfect to help in these situations.

I Googled it without the RCMP and found a PDF on it. It's called DataDot Marine Theft blah blah. Seems it's just for boats, not sure why something wouldn't be in place for bikes.

Sorry to hear Yarnell, I'll keep my eyes open. Over the last decade I've lost three canoes, one to white water and two to theft. The last one stolen I didn't replace on insurance as premiums started looking scary. I now use chains and locks around the yoke, they could saw through the yoke if desperation existed but so far so good. Best of luck.

Sorry to hear about this theft. Was the boat stolen from the water, a garage, a boathouse or what? I keep my canoe locked up tight in my garage and have had no problems with theft.

Again, sorry to hear about this. I'll keep my eyes open.
