It's an Earthstar... geastrum triplex...
Yeah, I'd never seen one in the wild before, and it was only 1" across...
Cool...

I found about a kilo of these in the Chehalis canyon today. I'm assuming they are lobster mushrooms. Good to eat? I see them dried in the supermarkets. Just about every source says they are delicious but the Petersons' guide lists them as "not recommended". |

Oh sorry Magnetite... are you waiting for someone to answer you??? Try Googling "Lobster Mushroom"... or go to Tom Volk's site... http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/aug2001.html ...
If even 1 book says it's "doubtful" you won't find it on the Save-On shelves... Dah...
"If in doubt, throw it out"... you heard it here first, folks...
This is what I had for lunch today...

Thanks C'Jack. I guess my question was leaning more towards whether or not anyone here had picked and eaten lobster mushrooms and if they thought they were any good. I cooked a small piece of one of them in a little bit of butter but couldn't really taste anything. The Chantrelles I got in the same area were pretty good though. With a bit of research I found that lobster mushrooms aren't really mushrooms at all but are the result of a parasitic red mold that discolours and distorts any number of mushroom host species, most often edible russalas. In very rare cases the hosts were found to be toxic. Upon eating it. I can't see why anyone would buy them for $6/100 grams down at Urban Fare.
When I lived in Logan Lake I used to pick shaggy manes. They grew along the road to Tunkwa in the thousands and would make a pretty good soup. |

When you say before they open... do you mean when the shags peel away from the cap? Cause they're doing that already |

A nice toxic one from the Chehalis canyon. A Deadly Galerina if I'm not mistaken, and just as poisonous as the deathcap and destroying angel amanitas. Luckily they're small and insignificant looking, so nobody bothers to pick them. The cap is about as wide as a penny. I'll be chantrelle hunting on my fishing trip again this Friday.

Couple from today...
 Yellow Amanita of some sort
Same mushrooms, left one with natural light right one with flash... Russulas?
This one has that orange lobster mushroom stain...and a snail.
 And a hot cross bun?
Also found a chanterelle, which I am about to eat. |

I'm in Logan Lake rate now at the "Shaggies" are already open unless you go off into the woods and search in the cool gulchs. You say they make good soup?

Mushrooms from today... 1 km from the mushrooms taken yesterday Another Amanita, this time a red one.
 Phallic mushroom of some sort
Side and bottom view of something I can't identify. It looked quite succulent ( luncxh was 4 hours earlier and I was hungry) but I didn't eat it on the off chance it was poisonous. |

A break in the rain... and a break from work...
What's happenin' ???
The right time to munch on a Shaggy...
...
The wrong time...
...
And a couple I haven't had time to ID yet...
...
...
...
and stepping backwards, I almost tripped over the kidlets snoozing... never even saw them... they just blended into the forest... they are 4ft away from me in this shot (bleary eyed)... 50mm Macro lens doesn't look like it...
...
and Mom's nowhere to be seen... maybe she found a *fella*... there are definite scrape signs around...
...then I see my neighbour finishing up his corn...
...
Too much excitement for one day... sigh...
Back to work...
