Here's a show I've been seeing advertised on OLN that I plan to watch. Starts this Monday (January 6th). Here's a link: http://www.olntv.com/OAArt_1791.cfm
SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Fifty carefully selected men and women from across the United States will have a chance to be part of the first-ever LIVE telecast of an attempt to summit Mt. Everest.
The adventure begins this fall in Moab, Utah and the Elk Mountains in Colorado, where participants will back-country traverse, rock climb, desert race, mountain bike and ice climb.
Twelve participants will then be selected to take on planet Earth in one of the most grueling physical challenges ever created as they vie for $250,000 in the new five-month-long series, which will air on the Outdoor Life Network. The event culminates with the first-ever LIVE telecast documenting an attempt to summit Mt. Everest.
FIRST EPISODE:
Moab, Utah: Adventure Circuit & Skills/Clinic: first 1/2: The 50 athetes convene in the Canyonlands surrounding Moab, Utah where they are exposed to the thrilling adventure as they undergo expedition-training in the first selection process for Global Extremes: Mt Everest-4Runners of Adventure. They participate in individual and team activities. They join forces as teams in an adventure circuit course involving rivercrossings, trail running, ridge traversing and boulder problems. They also rock climb in the La Sal mountains, run through the Moab desert and mountain bike on the famed single track and jeep trails of Utah.

That is definitely a reality show worth watching-for once!!!!Moab is an awesome place-when we were there in August it was getting a rare summer rainstorm. The kids loved hiking at Arches NP,and the Slickrock mtn bike trail is an absolute must, though if you bike the North Shore you won't find it as difficult as they all say!!! Oh my frigging God! Ok, I watched it. It's completely lame. Most of the competitors are delusional and the judges are totally inappropriate. I only hope there are more qualified people behind the scenes. What was part of the screening process for these competitors, they had to be good looking? and who are the judges...??? What's with the German guy who likes to bounce his bike over things? I guess that any decent experienced mountaineers with integredy (there are plenty of them who live in Washington state) would have laughed themselves to death at OLN's overatures. Climbing Everest is serious business. Reality TV? These people need to be oriented back to reality before we have another 1996 tragedy. I thought this was going to be a serious competition.
Will I keep on watching it? Probably, I am incorrigable.
See you on the mountain! |

I must say that I was thoroughly entertained... Almost like watching a Saturday Night Live skit. I think the most memorable moments were the goldfish back stroke by ol #36 and the header over the handle bars right in front of the judges by another contestant. Thank goodness climbing Everest doesn't require any biking or swimming. At the moment, I only see a couple people that could possibly even make an attempt at base camp. I think I have to stay tuned just for the amusement factor alone. Also amused by all the shameless Toyota advertising for the 4Runner.. But given what I have seen so far, it would have been more appropriate if the sponsor vehicle was an Echo.

Well,it's definitely not what I'd hoped for,I guess!!!There is always a requisite quota of lameness in these reality shows, unfortunately. The German guy ,by the way,is trials riding guru Hans Rey.He's no mountaineer, for sure, but he's quite the mtn biker. Two years ago he did a presentation at the Van Mtn Film Fest mtn bike night in N Van-he was quite hilarious.Had the chance to sit with him while watching the films and had a great time!!Check him out at www.hansrey.com.........Have to agree that not too many of these people are going to make it up Everest, but at least it's a better show than Drifters,or,worse yet,Survivor.I'll watch until I'm in danger of hurling, which could be soon....... I don't want to blow it for anyone, but lets just say this, "the second episode is far better than the first one, oh, and the guy survives the fall out of the helicopter".

Three hours ahead Foxtrots

I'm getting even more concerned. What sort of people send newbie climbers out on a wet and snowy sandstone rock wall to climb? I know they were top roping and had protection but testing anything in those conditions was pure stupidity. I'm sorry but the rationale that "they'll encounter sketchy conditions on Everest" doesn't cut it. Safety is paramount even on Everest and if conditions are bad, you stop until they get better. These OLN people are cowboys.
They also made a big show of checking taht all the contestants had the right gear and yet they allowed some climbers to wear tight denim jeans
I just figured out why they are planning on climbing the north side of Everest....have you figured it out?
...it's because you can drive right to the basecamp on the north side. This is more a photo-op for the Toyota Forerunner than it is about the climb.
See you on the mountain! |

Have to agree, the second episode was better.I loved the 5 mile bike/11 mile run day-my idea of a stellar day,for sure!!!!However,I must say that as someone who has never summitted a peak using climbing gear,I sure as hell would not be thinking of doing Everest after a couple of sessions on the indoor climbing wall.Maybe they ought to think about doing some actual climbs for say,a decade or so.Next session is in Aspen, where hopefully they'll weed out the non- climbers!!!!
