4 years ago I introduced my kids to backpacking with a single trip to Cheakamus Lake. They were 6 and 9. They loved it and our summers have been filled with backpacking since that time.
In a blink of an eye, they are now 10 and 13. My daughter (the 13 year old) now regards hikes to Garibaldi Lake, Russet Lake and the Elfin Lakes as old favourites. We've seen many summits together including the Black Tusk, Whirlwind, Fissile, 3 Brothers, and Frosty.
Last year our roles began to shift as she forced me up to Wedgemount Lake at an uncomfortable pace. This year she did the same on return trips to Garibaldi Lake and Russet Lake.
...and now she has left me behind on a week long trip school trip to Strathcona Park that will include canoeing, rock climbing and an overnighter under tarps, without an outhouse and during which the kids must do their own cooking ...
Sigh ... wish I were there ... and I figure she'll be giving me pointers, encouragement and advice from here on.
I think I need a support group and a new forum category: Hiking with teenagers.

Ive enjoyed reading about all your adventures with your kids Chucku, and Im looking forward to many more of my own with my daughter. I feel fortunate I have a 'role model' to follow now, and hope that my daughter also takes her current love of hiking into her teens |

Throughout the Vancouver School Board system, a number of the high schools offer special "mini-school" or similar programs each with different areas of special emphasis above and beyond the regular curriculumn (eg: French immersion, fine arts etc). My daughter is attending Prince of Wales Mini-school (150 students in grades 8-12, gender balanced and drawn from the entire VSB school district).
One of their major areas of enriched activity is the outdoors and community responsibility. I know that sounds like 2 areas of emphasis but the idea is that working together in an outdoors setting demands and teaches community responsibility. The trip to Strathcona at the start of the year is intended to immediately instil that sense of community (bonding, team-building) within the school.
Seperate and apart from the 5 year Mini-school program, Prince of Wales High School also offers an extraordinary program for Grade 10 students (also drawing students from the entire VSB district) called "Trek". In the Trek program students cover the regular curriculumn in 1/2 the school year and spend the other 1/2 engaged in extensive outdoor activities. Similar concept but concentrated into a single year.
Kinda makes you wish you could go back to high school after all!

Apologies for bumping my own thread, but I have to share the latest. The other day, I went running at lunch with a one of the guys I work with. We did a little interval training session that - like always - left me a basket case for the rest of the day. On the way home I picked up my daughter after her own workout with her running club. On the drive home I told her about my pain. She looks at me and offers her insight: "It doesn't matter how often you do intervals, it's not going to get any better."
Thanks sweety, I love you too.
