On Sunday morning, these three characters and I left Vancouver for Whistler.

Our objective: Rainbow Lake. A lovely 18km hike, according to the 103 Hikes (3rd Ed), with 2,700ft of elevation gain. We made plans to have lunch at Rainbow Pass (1.5km farther) overlooking Hanging Lake. We also planned to investigate any viewpoints to Beverley Lake.

At the end of the day, we had gained 3,030 feet, and hiked over 23km.

What fun! An early break on the first bridge crossing on the trail.

Mmmm, mushrooms. You can eat this one (pan-fried with a bit of garlic)

...but not this one...

Aaah, the meadows.

And some big rocks.

Finally the lake, and Rainbow Mountain…

But this is not the objective of our trip, as we make our way to Rainbow Pass, and leave Rainbow Lake behind.

A beautiful pond on the pass, and Hanging Lake behind

Interesting formations on the rock…

After lunch, the trail near the creek beckons for a visit. We gladly oblige, and make our way to the side of Rainbow. If we keep walking, perhaps we will catch a glimpse of Beverley Lake?

Interesting meadows, with HUGE white rocks

ClaireBear and Scrambler take a break

But time is short, Beverley is still hours away, and it’s time for a return visit. Beverley Lake will allow itself to be discovered another time.

A last glance at Rainbow Lake…

A last picture by Claire (what were you filming??)

A strange mushroom on the trail…

A wonderful group of people to hang with. Thanks Scrambler, ClaireBear and Paul for joining me on this journey!

cheers - C Wall

Hey nice one you guys! I was up to Rainbow last year, and loved it. It was my first BC hike.

So Rich, are you trying to knock off each Hanging Lake here in BC?

oooooh, nice pics you guys. It was a really fun day hiking with everyone and great to meet cwalls non-CT hiking buddy, Paul. This hike should really be named boardwalk way. There's so many of them This is an area I definitely want to spend a few days exploring. There's so many options, Beverley Lake, Hanging Lake, Mount Sproatt, Rainbow Mt, Gin and Tonic Lakes and the unnamed bumps. Ah BC, we live in heaven, eh?

I total agree with you Rich on a return trip to explore more pass Rainbow Lake and also capture the meadow flowers when they are in full bloom next year.

hi Mick,

We moseyed up to Rainbow Lake in less than 3 hours, and the pass beyond (1.5 km) took about half an hour. The descent was about 2 hours.

I had to watch my footing on the boardwalks, and there are a few roots protuding on some sections of the trail. But a Baden-Powell regular like yourself should have no trouble running up and down this trail

We saw a few runners on the trail, matter of fact.

Nice trail, as wide as the trail to Garibaldi Lake from Rubble Creek, but much softer - with some decidedly wet sections (therefore the boardwalk sections that go on and on and on)

cheers ! C Wall

Hey Seawallrunner
how does it look for an overnighter with pitching a tent at Rainbow Lake and doing some exploring the next day from the Lake?

I'll reply to this one for her. The lake is part of the Whistler watershed and there are signs at the trailhead and the lake saying no camping, no bikes, no dogs. We saw three dogs going up on our way down and we saw campfire circles so humans have been doing what they always do, ignoring the rules. You CAN camp at Hanging lake or anyplace past the sign on the ridge overlooking Hanging Lake. It's only another 30-45 minutes past Rainbow to get there and is just as lovely a spot. We also found some lovely camping spots in the meadows on the way to Beverley. Hope that answers your question.

Well, Clairebear, I guess after all that sleeping in the Pathfinder, you had to work off that excess energy! 3030ft vertical, I only wish I could due that right now.

Soon...
