| After a long few weeks of hard work and stress I need to get away and rest relax and rejuvenate. I've managed to get 6 days off on the the labour day weekend off, a reservation on BC ferries, and a place to stay so I off to Tofino. What I lack is a knowledge of the area. I want to do some short day hikes. I've looked online and in various books so I familar with some of the trails and walks around the long beach area. Is there any that CT members can recommend over others? I'm just looking for a couples of hours and not to demanding. |

The best trail around Tofino...actually it is closer to Ucualet (spelling?) is the half moon bay trail. Its about two three kilometers one way-steep steeps at the end and takes you to a small sheltered beach. You can also hike another kilometers or two-depending on the tides south along the rocks.

My favourite hike involves taking a water taxi to Meares Island. The Giant Cedars loop is unbelievable and well worth the water taxi fare.

| I realize that the original poster has probably come and gone from his Labour day exploits in Tofino, but I will list some of my favourite hikes out of Tofino. Tofino-Ucluelet offer some of the only easily accessible hikes on the west coast of the Island. The Wild Pacific Trail as mentioned in some of this thread is easy and offers some stunning sea side vistas. Half Moon Bay and Florencia Beach are also well worth the minimum effort. BTW the Gold Mine Trail which you may see marked on some of the free tourist maps is no longer in commission since Parks Canada closed it due to frequent wash outs of the bridge over the mouth of Lost Shoe Creek at the Florencia Beach end. If you have the time and ionclination there are three hikes that you can access out of Tofino by using water taxi services or eco tourist excursions. The Wild Side Trail on Flores is the best of these. It is about 9-10 miles long and connects pocket beaches on the west coast of Flores Island. Vargas Ilsnad Trail is shorter ane not as easily accessible but does take you to a great beach where you will see gray whales in the summer months. And the too often visited Hot Springs Cove trail is also reached out of Tofino. To avoid the crowds, try going there off season or staying overnight at the floating B & B in the harbour near the government wharf. |

I'm heading up there next week, rain is extremely likely - do you guys know of any reasonably cheap places to get a ride out to Hot Spring Cove? From all the operators sites I've looked at, the consensus seems to be 100 (for students) for a 6 hour trip. I would love to camp out there for a night.
Any ideas? |

We will be heading to Tofino this month.
We visit regularly and have explored the area widely. Some amazing hikes done recently in the area: Flores Island Wildside Trail; Vargas Island; Lone Cone; Vargas Cone.
Have any Clubtreaders have made any recent discoveries of new trails or interesting hikes or other adventures that are newly developed over the past 2-5 years?
Looking at recent CT posts, Mt. Ozzard looks interesting if the weather is good.
Has anyone climbed the two other peaks on Meares Island (Colnett and Sea Peak) or Catface Peak across the water? Any trails or routes?
Very grateful for any ideas. |

Ozzard is a good one. If you want to get up into some bigger mountains and into the snow, you should consider 5040 peak on the way out. Make sure you have snowshoes. Although not sure what the road conditions will be like on the way out there, the snow can get pretty deep in that area.
