Has anyone here done the Iceline Trail in Yoho? I'm looking for one last small backcountry trip over a weekend to do in mid-september. From all i've read this seems to be a perfect one. Anyone have some intel on it? I've done some searching and found some threads but nothing major on it. I see a lot of people stay in the hut up there.
Thanks Shaun

What do you need to know? The Iceline is a pretty straightforward dayhike - you probably want to combo it with the Little Yoho Valley Trail to make a loop.
A word of warning - Mid September in the Rockies can mean significant snowfall - have a back-up plan.

| Don't be too frightened off by the previous warning. September is commonly the best month in the Rockies as the weather has stabilized. The nights will be cool however, often below freezing. The hut is run by the ACC (Stanley Mitchell) and provides a good base for hikes or scrambles in the area. Although it can snow in September, it can snow any month in the Rockies, and generally snowfall in September amounts to around 10 or 20 cm at the most, at the highest elevations and can easily be walked through. I've done some of my best trips in September because of stable weather. |

I know there is the posibility of snow, I mean I was on the Skyline last weekend and it was +2 and hard blowing rain, who knows it could have snowed had it been a little cooler so I'm not surprised. I'd pack ready for snow just in case. Yeah I would want to make a weekend trip of this with a one night stay somewhere up there. Any recommendations on a site to spend the first night?

I just did the Iceline last week and it was great. I do it every year and I have hiked it in July, August and Sptember. I have had snow conditions in July and August. Last week it was bone dry . You get what you get - there is no "perfect month" to hike in the mountains. It can snow anytime. |
