| Does anyone know if the old Popkum Trail to Cheam summit is still usable? It is described in some older editions of 103 Hikes. Thanks. |

I took the road - actually it IS more like a trail now - up to what is described as the "viewpoint" in my old version of 103 hikes. I was pressed for time, so I didn't go any further. It is one UGLY piece of road! From the turnoff to the Para-Glider's jumpsite onwards, it is worse than the Chipmunk side. Definitely NOT for those who value their vehicle! Lots of blowdown (that has since been chainsawed) and LARGE cross ditches, big rocks and STEEEEEP sections! I was on a Trailbike and it took me about 3/4hr to make the viewpoint. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was about a kilometer or so from the end of the road, so I cannot say what condition the road is further on. This mountain is a favourite of mine and I hope to have it well mapped and documented before too long! I also hope to do the complete circuit from Popkum to Chipmunk (or vice versa) before the year is over! Check the BC Basemap, the logging roads are fairly accurate.

| I think your refering to the north side trail, and not the bridal falls access road ( washed out in 1997 ) first head east bound #1 just past the Popkum exit on the south side of the freeway there is a grass field with hydro towers, cross the grass field and WATCH OUT FOR THE BULL!!!!! if hes still there, look for a dried out creak bed/washout you should find the trail.....maybe,the trail will take you by indian falls there is a old beaten up metal sign with the name on it (if you get that far) The trail will eventualy branch off to 3 different accents 2 climbing the face and one scrambling, the trail is toast there is not much left of it, it has not been widly used for 20 years you will see a few tags on trees, I would not recomend this trail, I would say it is harder than galene and hanging lake due to the intense bush wacking involved and not as rewarding..... good luck if you attempt this. |
