Holy! Did you wash your hands after picking up that one? They used to make insecticide out of those. I heard that's why they're called fly agarics.

When I was up at Flora lake, I saw many different kinds of mushrooms right along the trail, brown ones, red ones, big ones, small ones, I have no idea what they are but they all looked neat. They were everywhere I looked. I took a pic of one but it turned out kinda fuzzy because my lens was fogged up a lttle bit and I didn't notice it.

mag: those amanita are ok to handle, they are poisonous but not deadly. There are actually ppl who will eat amanita muscaria for the euphoric effect they produce. however i do not reccomend it because the sideeffects (profuse sweating, delerium, dizzyness, nausea) can far outweigh the euphoric effects.
drifter: yes those look like chicken of the woods(chicken mushroom).

I was up before dawn this mornin', and decided to do a quickie hike to check out the new mushies in the neighbourhood... trouble is I never made it out of my garden !!!

Although the sun was on the other side of the valley, it was still quite dark in the forest... sorry about the quality of some shots...

I haven't had a chance to identify them all yet, so I'll fry them up and eat them for lunch and check 'em out this afternoon, when I'll have more time (... and if I'm feeling good)!!!

I hate mushrooms but they are cool to look at. I saw more different types of mushrooms on the trail through the alpine lakes wilderness than I've ever seen in my whole life. Some as big as dinner plates. Unfortunately it was raining and/or snowing most of the time so I didn't take pictures of most of them but there were some really cool looking ones. Anyone know what the black ruffly one is? Didn't get a pic of it but it was about 10 inches high, black and frilly. Looked more like a cabbage than a mushroom really. Here are a few I did capture:

that is interesting that your book classifies them as being 'deadly'.
The book that I use as reference The New Savory Wild Mushroom only classifies those amanitas containing the deadly amatoxins as being deadly. These are the mushrooms that if you eat even the smallest morsel , it could result in needing a liver transplant and chances of recovery are less than 50%!
A.muscaria does not have amatoxins, it has the poison muscarine(which albeit can be deadly if one was to consume a couple pounds of a.muscaria) but i do not consider that to be too threatening in comparison.

Hey Bill...

Since I'm not a biochemist or microbiologist (or even half smart... I'm just a farming engineer), and since I LOVE mushrooms... I have several books to draw info from... I'm also red/green colour blind, so choosing the wrong mushroom to eat can be *totally sickening*...

... ;o(

I'm not going to argue the definition of *poisonous* or *deadly* ('cause I stay clear of arguments in general), but neither am I gonna eat any Amanita either... one man's tom-a-to is another man's tom-ah-to...

My point is that I'm letting people know how to have fun with mushies, and only eat what you can absolutely, positively identify...

Cool...

R...

ps... by the way the Vancouver Mycological Society is having a foray into Manning this coming weekend... they're all booked up, but it might be fun to *tag along* a mile or so behind...

FYI,

I just read an article in the “Whatcom Independent” newspaper about mushrooms. The “Wild Mushroom Show” will be held in Bellingham at Bloedel-Donovan Park on October 10 from 12-5. It says there will be a nominal entrance fee.
Quote from the article:
You can view freshly gathered specimens of mushrooms from all over the county, rounded up and displayed by the members of the Northwest Mushroomers Association or NMA. You can also bring in your own specimens for identification and learn more about the many different types of mushrooms that grow here. The NMA sells books and other mushroom-related items as well.”

Here’s the link to the paper online (PDF format) and the article is on pages 18 and 20.

C.Jack, I totally agree with you, nobody should eat any mushroom that they are not %100 sure of what it is.

I didn't realize that the Vancouver Myc. society was having their fall foray already. I had been telling myself all summer that I was going to go this year, and now all of a sudden it's that time and I don't have the time to go. I was also hoping that I could go to the Mushroom show that they have been having at the Mission Rec. Centre for the last couple years , this year, but it doesn't look like they are having it. It's a great place to buy fresh Chanterelles, as well as books.
maybe next year.

the only one that resembles something edible is the fifth picture which is a little blurry, and they look like they could be oysters.
