Reminds me of time I spent in Russia. Not unlike The Shire, mushroom hunting is a rewarding pastime in many parts there.

I have to ask, is you name inspired by the hilarious Saturday Night Live sketches with John Goodman/Will Ferrell/Alec Baldwin? Or just a coincidence?
They would all stand around in a bar really drunk saluting the famous Bill Braski: "He's 9 ft. tall, and not unlike a crocodile, he can fully digest a tourtise shell!"

Hey Bill...

I'm an Oyster/Shiitake grower and Wild-Thing Hunter/Gatherer on any trail... they go great when sauteed with butter and garlic and a side 1/2 litre of wine... (burp)...

I'll buy some maps of the Island and send them to you, you put X's on the spots and send them back. we'll sell them to Japanese tourists and make lots of money. And for those that don't have a compass we can guide them, after they sign a waiver stating there's no guarantee on finding them. The Ministry of Tourism will give us grants too. we can then go buy more gear for ourselves. Freedom 35!! buahaha

yes, my name is inspired from SNL! To Braski!

CJ ,I grew blue oysters on poplar logs last year, they have yet to make a comeback with all the dry weather we are having. It was a bad year last year for mushrooms because of the dryness and this summer looks like it is going to be a repeat of the last one. I have a morel culture, but from what i read, they are near impossible to cultivate.
I went out several times looking for them in April/May in the Mission hills, but didn't find any.

Here's a group you may be interested in. It's the Vancouver Mycological Society. They do mushroom walks and it would be a great chance to get to know some of the local mushrooms.

I've been out a few times but didn't get out for the morels this year despite the fires last year. They were pretty cheap in the markets this year due to the abundance. I'm pretty comfortable with morels, king boletes, shaggy manes and chantrelles.

val, I've been to a couple of their annual mushroom shows. It's a great place to buy mushrooms and meet ppl. Last year I met a oyster mushroom cultivator and got a tour of his facility where he grows.
it was awesome.
mag, where is a place you can buy morels?

Me too... I'm constantly lookin'.. My eyes are always to the ground, and I miss all the scenery (another reason why I'm always *late* and at the back of the pack...)

Usually best in the fall after a long wet summer...
