Hey everyone... I've just added a photo upload feature to ClubTread.

When you go to make a post you'll notice that there's a new button on the toolbar... . Clicking that button will open a new window that allows you to upload a picture and its description.

What all does it do? Good Question!
It uploads the picture to our server, along with its description.
It inserts codes for a thumbnail image into your post.

When the thumbnail is clicked, a window pops open that displays the full-size image, along with the description you added.

The feature ONLY supports jpg images at this time - and a maximum file size of 1MB.

Here's a sample:

No excuses for not sharing your pix now! Enjoy!

I'd rather be hiking!

And 10 points are awarded to Pathfinder! That's a picture I found on the net of Elfin Lakes. I still hope to go there.

Oh, about the whole "backpacker_029" thing, I thought our Club Tread name at the beginning had to have no spaces, otherwise, I would have put "The Backpacker" or something! You guys can call me "Dragos" as I am usually called...

Where's your pic from, Pathfinder?

Heheheh good point! We're hoping that people will optimize the images before uploading. What I will probably do is periodically check through the uploaded photos and optimize any that haven't already been optimized. Shouldn't have any visual effect, but will reduce the file size down and make it more manageable. Might have to buy another hard drive too.. lol

That's looking at Lady Peak from the Cheam Peak trail last weekend. With Netscape, the picture is saller but with IE it is a big picture and you can't see the caption part of the window.

OK. I'm dumb I know a pg is smaller than a bmp but I'm sure there is more to optimizing images than that. Can you walk me through it? Thanks!

You won't want to use BMPs. Those are really big files!

My recommendation would be to save the file as a JPG and reduce it to about 30-35% quality. The image will still look wonderful onscreen and will have alot of space. Also, I would recommend changing the physical dimensions of the files and make them no more than 500 pixels wide (max). That will also keep them considerably smaller since many digital cameras take them at >= 1600 pixels wide. Those two combined should reduce most photos to about 30-40 kilobytes max and are perfect for the web.

In one of my first postings to the group I asked the question about seeing the Northern Lights. Here is a picture I took with a time exposure just outside of Banff Alberta. I think a few of you thought I was kidding (Kodiak)
