I'm just trying to gather info on this road, which begins near Big Hill Springs Provincial Park west of Calgary and runs north through Nordegg, and then on to Hinton.Wondering about the road's condition and what's cool to see on it.I figure it must be great for wildlife and mountain views.Probably we'll be on it late this month, and I'll be driving my Dodge Caravan.Any info from an experienced Alberta traveller would be great!Hey,TMac,you out there?Sorry about the Flames,bro'...

Hey Mick; I used to live in Calgary in the early 70's and the folks always took us out that way for a sunday drive. Real nice country as I recall. The mountain aire lodge area(red deer river) was nice. As is the ram river falls. Not much in the way of fuel stations though! You might want to look into that. The road itself is as I recall your typical hard pack, but parts could be paved now. Oh, and around that mountain aire lodge.. is a working ranch right in the mountains. I can't remember the name though.Have a good trip.

It's a good road - 2WD all the way. There are lots of places to head a bit west from the road for excellent mountain biking and hiking. The drive itself is quite pretty and a nice change from driving straight up the main highway. If you want guidebooks the ones to check out are Backcountry Biking in the Canadian Rockies and the Kananaskis series by Gillean Daffern. You can actually continue all the way south down to Waterton on these roads - or their cousins.

Thanks Darren, and Sandy.Glad to hear it's in decent shape.I've wanted to check the area just to get a change from the Icefields Parkway, which I love but have been on so many times.. .

Check out the Ram Falls between Nordegg and Rocky Mountain House. Timmy loves it there.
