I will be visiting Oahu island in hawaii this summer, and was wondering if anyone can suggest some good hikes, I do plan on biking/hiking up diamond head, but am also looking for somthing a little more challenging, perhaps even an over night hike.
Any suggestions are greatly appreaciated.

hi, mars, i love hiking on oahu, and there are some great hikes there. difficulty varies from easy to very strenuous and dangerous. i hope you like hiking in the mountains because there are 2 main mountain ranges to choose from, the koolau and the waianae.
hiking in the koolau range on the windward (eastern) side is beautiful and lush, with lots of ridge walks. there are many entry/exit points on this range, so you can go for a dayhike or as long as a week if you want. this side of the island can be wetter and you need to watch out for flash flooding.
if you see rain clouds on the windward side then head west to the leeward side and the waianae range where it will most likely be dry. the kaena point hike goes along the shoreline and at certain times of year you can see the nurse sharks at "sharks cove". take caution in the summer because it gets REALLY hot and there is very little water to be found.
personally, my favourite hike is the haiku stairs, or "stairway to heaven" in kaneohe but because of the controversy around this trail, i'm not suggesting you try it, but use your own discretion. check out http://www.backyardoahu.com/ for some ideas.
warning: do not drink from creeks or streams without treating the water and take caution when swimming in pools or waterfalls because it will most likely be contaminated with leptospirosis. *yuck*
have fun!
