Shadee and I kayaked from Granville Island yesterday morning: we spent two hours bobbing about in our single kayaks in the calm waters of False Creek, and being the envy of tourists ferrying about in Aquabus miniboats.
I didn't take my digital camera with me this time - but did take a previously-forgotten disposable camera that had a few shots left.
We saw lots of sailboats, geese, seagulls, police boats, anchored boats both sumptuous and barely surviving - one with a small black cat very impatient to get off, NOW !! 'can I come on board of your kayak, please? please? pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease?' He looked like Diesel's impatient little brother.
What a great way to start the day. Thanks Shadee for your great company!
cheers - C Wall
No Financial Interest: Let me mention that Ecomarine on Granville Island has Two-For-One Tuesdays. Renting two kayaks for two hours on Tuesday morning was about $38 total, or $19 each. Not bad for a mid-week morning escape. The Two-For-One deal is available all day long ever Tuesday until Labour Day, at both Ecomarine locations (Granville Island and Jericho Beach).
Ecomarine on Granville opens weekdays at 9am, and there's free parking for 3 hours on the island. Kayaks are launched from the dock at Granville Island, this may be difficult for beginners. After a virtuous paddle in False Creek or in English Bay, one may wish to sample some of the fresh foods in the Granville Market, or have a delicious bubble tea. Mm-mm good.
Ecomarine at Jericho Beach opens weekdays at 11am, and parking there is paid parking - if you don't find parking on the streets a few blocks away. I *think* parking is $4 for 2 hours, don't quote me on this. You start your journey from Jericho beach, not from a dock, and may want to cap the paddle with a lovely lunch at the Sailing Centre. |

| A great way to spend an afternoon, ya can avoid the crowds in a busy area and with a good breeze, not too hot either. Also a great way to watch the fireworks in August. Thanks fer the tip on kayak rentals. |

Sounds great. Where did you launch from and Granville Island?

hi Ronbo - we launched our kayaks from the docks near the Champagne Cruises, eg, just to the right of Ecomarine's storefront if you are standing in front of it and facing the store. The pier is about 24" above the water level, and rises and falls along with the tides. This means that one has to enter the kayak from its side, placing all of one's weight on one's hands and arms, instead of on one's legs.
Ronbo - where do you kayak from, in Belcarra? what is the name of the place, and what are their rates? do they have a web site?
cheers ! C Wall |

I did the Tuesday night deal there last year. good bang for the $. Was looking forward to doing it more when I had an injury.
I took lessons at Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak. Very informative. It felt SOO RIGHT the moment I slipped into the water! HOping to do the second level lesson this year...it's the lesson where one gets WET. heh.
A friend builds his own kayaks...i'd love to have one...but i'd have to buy a house so there's room for a kayak. $$
if the summer fire's shutdown the woods again... i hope to kayak some more.

I believe the name of the place in Belcarra is Takaya Rentals. Yup! Just found the flyer. Owned by the Tsei-Waututh Nation. Takayatours.com. 604-904-7410 Looks like they operate from Cates Park, Deep Cove and Belcarra. They operate a shuttle between Belcarra and Deep Cove. $10return. Hey Seawall & Shadee....next time you go for a paddle let me know!! I would love to come along. (If you would like me to that is! ) Q |

Thanks Q, Darn if I could remember the name of them. I assume they open mid June. Seawall, I am planning to do the 58 km of shoreline this June of Pitt Lake. The camp spots are tight I hear. One to 3 people to pitch a tent. Will do a report when I do, so others can go up. Hope to go with a larger group but DW2 said space is tight for camping up at the top of the lake.

| There are big tides right now in the evenings, 15 feet at Tswassen and the moon is still waxing so expect it to last for another two weeks. I'm planning on heading out to explore the newer channels that will open up in the marsh this evening and Friday as well if anyone is interested in paddling that as well. Also I know of a new rental place now in the north shore that has reasonable rates on overnight canoe and kayak rentals so if anyone attending the False Creek paddle is out of luck at that place let me know and I'll pass on the tip. |

I just put in a call at the Deep Cove kayak/canoe rental centre. Id like to see what group rates the manager there (I know him quite well) can put together for me It would be nice to get a trip together for perhaps this coming sunday, weather permitting, I dont wish to paddle in the rain, that can be cold and miserable - or in the near future I will post (likely on a new thread) when i get a response, and see who would be interested in joining me I plan on taking my girl with me also, her and I did a lot of kayaking when she was just four years old In a group you dont need the solo rescue certificate to rent,(even for a one person kayak) they only ask that if a person is going completely alone. Paddle on calm waters, exploring little islands, and even taking a lunch for a picnic, how good can it get? |

I'm super-busy next week (including Tuesday night) but perhaps the week after? an evening kayaking with CT'ers on Tuesday at Jericho or on Wednesday at Deep Cove would be *wonderful*.
Who is interested?
