What's the point? It's understandable if you are retracting a commitment from a previous post but posting you can't make trip from the beginning seems like a waste of bandwidth. I think trip planners want to see who is onboard, not sift through posts from people who can't make it.

Sorry, I don't have time to reply to this thread. I'll try next time.
Seriously, I agree, though I can understand the politeness of letting the organizer know they would like to join but cannot. In the end, it's not a big deal either way. |

LOL a LOT of the posts on this board are a waste of bandwidth. While we're at it... how about if we come up with a way of distinguishing relevent hiking/backpacking/climbing info from the endless photoshop creations & inside jokes?
I'm just kidding... I don't really care. It just seemed kind of silly to act as if this is some kind of serious hard core forum. I spend half my time here sifting through information I don't care about. Things I don't care about may be important to others and vice versa. So what if someone wants to express and intrest in a trip but regret that they can't make it? The amount of bandwidth it takes to store a short text message is insignificant compared with the bandwidth we suck up with Photoshop mutations.

agreed, text takes up very little bandwidth... perhaps what HB means is that were chewing up 'webspace' rather than 'bandwidth'? If so, I'm sure the PHPbb database that is the CT message board.... has plenty of room to grow |

Perhaps a veiled cry for herself to be photoshopped . Personally, I think that there is merit for a good photoshop job. I know that this is primarily a hiking/ backpacking forum, but we all like a bit of comedy relief every now and then. I've seen some great photoshop jobs posted on Club Tread that really helped make my day by giving me a really good laugh, and I'm sure that others will agree with me on this one. If bandwidth and disk space are actually an issue (which I really don't think is the case) then I'd like to hear Longshadow say it is so.

Ooooohhhh can I write a really lengthy response here and use up some of that bandwidth ... oppsss let me call that webspace, gotta get it right for those who dont know what we are talking about here, after all we all know text takes up very little space in a computer file anyhow I think the relevant point here is that when organising an event (especially one of the dinners) where you need to do headcounts to reserve seating at a restaurant, or organise carpooling for a trip, it becomes fiddly to sift through all the comments. So a person saying theyd like to but cant come, well Im sure the thought is appreciated, but its easier for the trip organiser to just knwo who is in for sure. I have often seen a person say "lets keep this thread tidy please"
I like that this is a relaxed site, where a person can feel free to say what they may (just watch for fallout ), so hiking humour and the mutated photoshop jobs all help to brighten our day, as do the trip reports perhaps just trying to keep comments where appropriate might be the right thing to do, then that could be debated couldnt it.... and so it will go on......

Webspace, bandwidth, multiple useless posts...you say tomehto, I say tomahto! Seriously folks, I know it's a small issue but I really can't see the point. Ego perhaps? I personally see it as a courtesy to the planner not to post unless you are signing up or adding some helpfull suggestions. I believe that Longshadow has posted on this subject but it remains buried and obviously needs to be brought up from time to time.
There's nothing wrong with a good photoshop, as rare as they are. It's nice to see most of them kept in the humor category though.

I rather like it when people post even though they may not be able to come, for the following reasons: 1. They often have been recently or know something about the hike and are being informational, for which I really appreciate this site. 2. It shows me who's reading my posts (not just how many) and although they may not be able to make this one, can possibly make a later one,or one of a similar nature so I get ideas of what else to post...also sometimes I have pre-discussed a hike with someone, and though it may appear they are just saying "can't make it" I the poster, know that they are being polite enough to acknowlegde they noticed it....but have other ensuing circumstances. It adds to the conversation when they do make it...I do find it to be pleasant and courteous...

I agree with Min... trip planners can always gauge the potential popularity of a specific trip based not only on who can go, but also who would be interested (but cannot) attend. Everyone's entitled to their point of view, though

LOL! This must be why it's taking forever to get my "four stars". I'm not wasting enough bandwidth and ppl's reading time.
I have to agree, I read more from ppl who say they're not doing something and not reading enough from the ppl who are doing something. This includes the trails-done-to-death TR's. Some real news would be if they finally paved the trail.
I read far more than I post, and feel no compulsions to post about everything. (After all, it took me a week and a half before I found the "CT Addiction" thread) I like to keep my useless banter in the humour section. If nothing else, I should at least get a good laugh.

all same reasons as what minou said ^
I'm on another forum where we got rid of post counts cuz ppl were starting to spam for the higher counts. Albeit it doesn't seem to be a problem here.
Is free gear or gorp awarded for obtaining stars ? Now that would be incentive to get my post count up =)
