I happened to be lucky enough to have my camera on hand to document this experience.

We have bears in our yard in Squamish virtually every week. Two weeks ago, we accidentally left our garage door open for about a half hour in the middle of the day, and during that time, a very large black bear wandered in and had just started to go through some of our camping gear when we heard him and chased him away.

Two days later, he came back- trouble is, the garage door was closed- but since he knew there was something interesting inside, he ripped off one of the panels on the roll-up garage door trying to get in. Again, fortunately, we were home and when we heard the commotion, ran outside and chased him off before he could get into the garage.

We phoned the conservation officer- but despite the fact that the bear is now intent on getting right into our house- and could from the garage easily get into our kitchen and the rest of the house- the conservation officer claims he is not an aggressive bear and refuses to do anything.

Any suggestions about what my options are? We're now sleeping in our bedroom with the door locked and the bear spray and bear bangers at our bedside.

You may have to start thinking where a nice spot in your home would be for a bearskin rug.

But seriously, get a shotgun like Farmer said and shoot the thing. If its invading your home then that's a SERIOUS problem. If you don't have a gun then make friends with someone who does.

A gun is not needed. You have bear spray and bangers so haze it with both.

But will the negative reinforcement of the bear spray and bangers be enough to overcome the fact that the bear knows there is food in our house?

Where do the rest of you living in bear country keep your food and camping gear? Do I have to install a steel bear cache in our kitchen?

I did have to shoot a rogue bear many, many years ago- but that was out in the wilds in a bush camp. Do I need to have a permit to shoot a bear coming into my house? Why don't they require the bear to get a permit before he can come into my house?

Can you rig up an electric fence around your garage door?

Not easily. Besides, it would look ugly.

Maybe I should get an electric cattle prod (not that I want to get that close to a bear to try using it).

You don't need a permit to shoot a bear that breaks into your house, you're free to fire at will at that point.

Are you sure?

Funny story- years ago, a bear broke the basement door down at the house next door. When myself and the neighbour on the other side looked over, we noticed all these big lights- turns out the bear had discovered a marijuana grow operation!

Must have been Smokey the Bear.

The electric fence doesn't have to be a permanent thing, and they work like GREAT!!

If a bear is to the point of breaking into a house, a gun is exactly what is needed.

1 have the conversation officer over for a late BBQ once a week until he has an ecounter with bear

2 Spray the bear, full can, doubt he will return

3 contact a lawyer

4 gun fire at your house will be a lenghty RCMP investigstion, even more if you dont have license

5 likely to be a visitor at Halloween

Maybe you could contact the bear control people at Whistler and see what advice they can offer. From what I've heard they've been pretty good at minimizing Whistler's bear problems.

I don't know what they can do that the conservation officer in Squamish couldn't.

Will it get any worse if the NDP is elected next May?

Have you considered setting up a critter cam? Just for entertainment.

It's possible the bear control people have a different approach from the conservation officers.

The bear problem will only get worse if run-of-river projects are halted, BC Hydro remains in under public control, and MEC is like it used to be.

BINGO! That would do it- I just need to tie a lawyer up at the garage door and the bear would be gone and a hundred miles away in a flash!

I think people over react to some bear "problems" They were just lounging around in someones backyard, like they probably would have eventually just moved on if someone did not make such a big deal about it. It's just wildlife. Live with it.
