Would like to hike this Sat. Particularly interested in a hike where there are good views of glacial features like moraine and till, or volcanic features. (I'm trying to scout out a good hike to take a group of Earth Science students on.) I'm open to suggestions!

Ptarmigan Ridge at Mt Baker would be a good one. Great alpine ridge walk. If not the Opal Cone area of Diamond Head in Garabaldi Park would be another good choice.
If the bridge is back in Heliotrope Ridge at Mt Baker would be another good choice. Hope these help.

Hands down the best place to get really close to a glacier and assorted landforms is Heliotrope Ridge.

The road is well maintained, the trail is only 3 miles (each way) and while they may not have bridged crossings - all but one are easily leaped over - and none are dangerous.

I can't think of anywhere in SW BC that doesn't require a really long approach on a terrible road and a really long hike on a terrible trail.

If crossing the US border is a deal breaker I would suggest Cerise Creek - I haven't been there since the approach road was deactivated but I heard there was a new flagged route from the highway with a makeshift crossing over the creek (or perhaps a re-route that avoids it entirely) - there is a tremendous moraine right next to the hut (Anniversary Glacier) and you can easily make your way to the foot of the Twin One glacier which has giant Seracs that you can get close enough to touch.

BTW - I'm also looking to join in on a hike this Saturday.

Could always head way up Pemberton Meadows - view the aftermath of the Meager slide (not volcanic per se, but that area is volcanic), even stop off at the Pebble Creek hot springs...

Thanks for your fantastic suggestions, everyone. On this thread, and another I started, Helm Lake in Garibaldi, and Mt. Baker (Coleman glacier, Ptarmigan Ridge, Heliotrope Ridge) seem to stand out in peoples' minds. Anyone up for a day trip to one of those? I have never hiked Baker (except with my snowboard) and don't know Helm Lake, either. I'd be really game for either, though Baker has a little more appeal! I'm out for dinner/evening tonight, but will check CT when I get home. If anyone interested, fantastic! Maybe email me your phone # and I'll try calling when I get home.

The Whistler Grand Fondo is tomorrow (Saturday) - traffic will be absolutely hell on the Sea to Sky... might want to rethink a trip to Helm!

The Coleman Glacier is on the Heliotrope Ridge hike - Ptarmigan Ridge is a great hike but its too exposed to take newbies on, melts out really late and it doesn't really fit your criteria. The views of Rainbow Glacier are great but you are way above it for most of the hike - you are not intimate with the glacier & moraine like you are at Heliotrope.

If you want a primer on all the Baker trails check out my website: http://www.members.shaw.ca/karenanddavid/mt%20Baker.htm

We have decided on our favourite Baker hike, Skyline Divide for Saturday

Thanks, Ryan. Maybe Baker it is, then... I know it's last minute, but if anyone's interested, let me know. I'll check my email in the am. I'm not picky about when I go tomorrow.

Thanks so much for the info.
Tried Heliotrope Ridge, Baker, with 2 of my Sunday School kids. I figured if they can do it, my high schoolers can! The Coleman glacier and views of Baker summit were awesome. The last creek crossing was a bit nerve-wracking with kids, but we all made it. A great trip, and plans to take my high schoolers are underway. Thanks very much for your input, everyone. Maybe one day I'll get to try out the other suggestions. Would like to try Skyline on Baker.
