Just heard/seen on CFCN news Calgary that Rick Collier was leading a group up a route near Mt Robson when part of the face broke away. He apparently died of his injuries. Did a search for links, but couldn't find any. I've only heard from one source. If this is true, a Canadian mountain legend has passed away. My sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Yeah, apparently they were on Mt. Geikie.

This is very tragic news, my condolences to Rick's family and his many friends, particularly the Old Goats who shared so many of his mountain adventures.

Rick was a good friend. We last talked the day he was leaving to go climb Geikie. His last email to us Old Goats started with Good By, which I had never seen him actually do before. I know he expected to return from this trip like so many others, but it seems he he felt the need to bid a farewell.

This is a big loss for so many including Mardy (partner) his children and grandchildren, the ACC, the Old Goats, The NDP, the environment and of course everybody he ever touched in the climbing world. He was one of the living legends still out there doing it.

He completed many many lists. He was just working on one more. I will help him complete one of these next summer, the the name of the Old Goats.

Rest In Peace Rick

What a blow. I've done many trips with Rick. He was a strong determined mountaineer. Sadly missed and a huge loss to the climbing community.

Rick in his element on Mount Huestis in Banff National Park, a long, long way from anywhere.

Damn. Rick was nothing but awesome, and I spent many hours reading his writings. He will be more than missed. 71 and still getting after it.

At 71 perhaps it's best to honour him by celebrating his life the way he lived it for such a long period of time. It's cliche enough but true non the less....best to go in the mountains doing what you love as opposed to withering away slowly in a care home. I think that's a great thing.

First off - to all who knew Rick, I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

And I think Kevin's right - why not post picturess and stories to celebrate his life instead of this becoming a sad thread.

He was obviously well loved and respected - celebrate his life!!!

I think it's true....and after paying respects, it's probably best to just go out and enjoy the outdoors for him. I know that's what I'd want.

From his Bivouac page:
"Rick Collier was killed on August 15, 2012, in a climbing accident on Mount Geikie, in Mount Robson Provincial Park, near the Tonquin Valley."

My sincere condolences to Rick's family and friends. I've spent many, many hours looking at his photos on Bivouac and reading his trip reports. He was a true Canadian mountaineering legend and an inspiration to many, and will be missed even by those who didn't know him personally.
