almost made it up mt. weart . Climbed to wedgemount lake in 3.5 hours from the lot (fairly good time with overnight gear, 4 hours is the recommended time without overnight gear). last time i was up there was about 6 years ago, the logging road is in much better condition. one of my hiking partners i met through the ubc voc was a machine, he made it to wedgemount lake in 2 hours!!!! 2 hours!!!!!! unbelievable!!!! i kept climbing expecting to ...run into him but he was waiting at the lake. Anyways so once we made it to the lake we unloaded overnight gear and went down to the lake drainange looking for a route to the south, not finding one we returned to the lake and went up the standard scramble route up mt. weart. made it to the col at 7:30pm (about 3.5 hours from the hut, fairly good time) decided to turn around about 150m below the summit, it was so close, so close, so close. the scrable up weart is dangerous, massive loose rocks, and many steep rock climbs (nothing vertical but some dangerous moves, it definitely pushed me) I got back to the hut at 10:30, darkness at 9:20. Slept under the stars, lots of stars, didnt sleep much. one of my hiking partners took the photos.
hut and weart
VOC climbing partners
wedge summit far left
me almost at the hut
wedge is bigger then it looks because its actually very far away
nothing like drinking glacier water and resting up the the mountains
wedge from the col
weart from the col
view north from the col (7:30pm)
the machine (read the story above)
me kinda ticked about not summiting
lake at around 9:30pm |

Good effort! You guys stayed overnight at the lake, why didn't you attempt it the next day?

Thanks for the info on Weart. So it is loose rocks and scary eh? Bummer this time but perhaps next time you would make it...
If there is no big bag to carry, using calf and knee muscle to make small jog like steps to run steep hills could get your body much faster than walking which might surprise you. I sure did myself. |

| That rubbly pile of crap will be there next time, and the time after that. Looks like you still had a good time. I met a guy the other day that, because of a new hiker he was with, took 12 hrs to climb Weart, lake to lake. |
