Looking for a decent(ish) four or six person tent for car camping with my non-outdoorsy wife. Struggling to find anything online for what I consider a decent price. Anyone out there got something they want rid of? Or suggestions as to where I might find one?
We're doing a craft show on the Sunshine Coast 18th/19th August and would like one before then if at all possible.
Thanks in advance. |

seboyle,
For your needs, you are probably better off getting something from Canadian Tire and backing it up with a cheap woven blue tarp. This would be the most cost effective route for you to go. If your wife later decides to get into extended backpacking, canoeing, or kayaking trips, then you can upgrade your gear.

these tents are currently on sale at REI. The nearest outlet is in Bellingham, if you order online you can pick up in store (or not pick up, if the tent is not to your liking). There are some 4-person and 6-person tents among the offerings.

I have the REI Basecamp 4 which I have used for week-long base camps. It has survived wind storms, a hail storm, and it's comfortable and roomy. Easy to set up too. You can find out more here. |

@DWK Fraser A decent price? Well that's the $64,000 question (but definitely not the answer Basically, if I can't get something at more than, say, 25% off (new and unused) then I generally won't buy it. I have looked at the MEC tents of course but need to find the right one on sale.
@prother I'd love to think she might get into it but it really won't happen. After 16 years together I'm as sure of that as I can be of anything. Car camping is her limit. She's the arty one (hence the upcoming craft fair). Hence I'd rather get something reasonable now that I will be able to use on extended road trips or canoe trips or as a basecamp or whatever. There's a good thread on the cheap crappy tire and tarp v good tent options on here somewhere and I did consider it but I know I'll be able to put it to good use in the future if I get a better one.
@seawallrunner I'm looking at that link right now as there appears to be an extra 20% off until the 9th August. Thanks for the link. |

seboyle,
Get the biggest, stand-up-inside tent from Canadian Tire and with the money you save over a MEC crawl in tent, buy a double wide mattress and maybe an electric lantern.
If you don't pamper her on this trip, there won't be another!
Later, make the trips a bit further and a bit harder... Maybe a drive in camp site, but a long day hike and then back to comfort. Wean her in on the back country.
That's been my plan in the past... but here I am single, so maybe don't listen to me after all.
