Pushed the bike up from Foley FSR to the turnoff for the old road, which is at around 1000m. Rode up that way a bit too, but didn't get very far. Getting bushy, but easy travel.

Baby Munday from the old road. We hope to make the north summit (left).

Where you leave the old road is well marked...can't miss it. : )

Crossing Airplane Creek.

Now the real grunt work is in front of you, apart from the bike pushing. This is a very steep trail.

We finally leave the trees and, thankfully, the grade eases. Start coming across snow too.

It's hot, but there is a lot of water still flowing all throughout this hike, and still lots of snow above 1800m.
We head for the pass (left of center) between Knight and Baby Munday. Probably could have turned left earlier than that for Knight.

Baby Munday's north summit from the pass. Pic #2 is of Stewart Peak from the pass, just a stones throw away. : )

Katie heading up towards Knight Peak. We basically followed a rib of larger, more stable rocks up. All snow towards Knight is avoidable.

Travelling the ridge.

Katie approaching the summit.

Summit shots. : )

Good vantage point overlooking Wahleach Lake.

Back down at the pass, and as intimidating as Baby Munday is from down there, we decide to give it a go.

We are heading for that notch, left of center. Steep. Katie stuck to snow as long as she could, and I stayed in the very loose scree, but kept the snow at my side to plant the ice-axe in. A lot of work. A lot of wasted steps when the scree would give way.

Nearing the notch.

The short scramble to the north summit. No sense of exposure to me, but Katie wasn't too fond of it. She balked at one section and started whining. Even turned around and started heading back down. So I dropped the pack, leashed her and guided her up, no problem.

Baby Munday, north peak. She wasn't happy on such a small summit, with vertical drops in every direction, so it was capture a few pics and head down. I was a little shakey too, but pumped from making it. : )

A steep trail makes for a fast descent, so we were back at Airplane Creek in no time. Hung around here for a bit and gave Katie a good soaking. : ) The 100m steep ascent from here, back up to the old road is a bit cruel to put near the end of a long hike, but what can you do. : )

Looking back...we were up there. : )

Two new summits for us, and it feels great. : )

If you can believe it, not one hiker, motorbike, quad or 4x4 until we were back at the car on Foley FSR, and a very dusty car at that. Bugs were not a problem.
Car to car was 9 1/2 hours and perhaps 20km, with 2108m of cumulative elevation gain.
Hope you enjoy...we did. : )

| Impressive John and I say if Katie can do it, then so can I. Maybe. :) Is Foley next on your list? or Welch? You've come along way since you started on CT. Congrats. |

Well done John.
Super. getting the two peaks on a sunny day. That 100 M ascent near the end is a bit tough.

Thanks Kanike. Test yourself and see if you can handle that kind of elevation gain in a day. If you can, then there you go, go for it. The most difficult part was the steep, loose scree slope up to the notch between the 2 Munday peaks. Perhaps drop the pack at the Knight/Munday pass and do Munday first. Hiking solo, I always have my pack with me, however.
No desire to do Welch or Foley. Exposure doesn't agree with me. : ) |

Nice Job.
How much of a ride was included distance wise do you figure? That the same access road for Laughington I'm guessing? A lot quicker riding down then up I bet

| Thanks for the trail and road update, was wondering about that place. If you go up around the East side of the base of Munday it's possible to avoid the scree. I've been up the trail maybe 6 or 7 times, but have always had the luxury of driving at least to the parking spot (or further). Starting from the Foley main would be way funner - yeah right. |

Thanks. According to what I have read, starting from Foley FSR adds just under 8km to the round trip, and there wasn't much riding on the way up. Katie sets the pace on the way down, so it's a slow go (as far as biking goes) and I ride the brakes practically the whole way. Where you turn off of Airplane FSR is at around 1000m, and not the same turnoff for Laughington.

Ya, I guess I didn't give much of an update on the trail/road conditions, did I. The cross-ditches have been graded to the parking spot. They're still there, just more mellow now. Trail down to Airplane Creek was quite muddy in spots, but I suppose that is normal there. Some blowdowns to navigate below the alpine.

I thought heading to in between the notch of the Baby Mundies, would be a better route. Having twice visited Stewart and vicinity crossing the sideslope heather, not liking the steepness strain on the ankles and the tendency to slide off the vegetation.
Doe you mean close to the base of Baby Munday to get around, high enough to avoid the lower slopes.

Nicely done! A great trip and report John! I plan on getting up those 2 peaks soon, your trip report will make things easier. Katie sure is an amazing mountain dog! I love Beagles, but I never would have guessed that they could be so capable on the scrambles. Scott |
