South Wind Creek Hoodoos, August 1, 2012, 8 km. return, approx. 250 meters elevation gain.

We had a couple of hours to kill in the late afternoon/early evening and decided to explore the trail system around the Mt Lougheed viewing point. There is a gravel road that goes south for about 1.5 km from Dead Man's Flat. This is the trail head for Mt Allen (north), Pigeon Mt and Wind Ridge. We didn't have time to go up Wind Ridge, so we headed for a feature marked hoodoos on our Gem Trek map. Instead of going to Wind Ridge, you take a fork to the left.

We didn't see them and kept on going along a sketchy trail for another kilometer. The trail levels off and heads in an easterly direction. I think that it probably joins with the East Wind Pond route, but I can't confirm that as we turned around. I thought we were had somehow got on the wrong trail because of the absence of hoodoos. On the way back, I noticed a faint trail overlooking a drop to the creek below and spotted a few small hoodoos. I am guessing that they may have been more impressive in the past, as the area seemed quite eroded and washed out. There are some nice views of Windtower, Rimwall, the Three Sisters, and Wind Ridge nearby, but you are mostly hiking through the trees. I think the views from Wind Ridge would be vastly superior. My verdict: don't bother unless you want an easy hike to stretch your legs.

1. Windtower and the four peaks of Mt Lougheed
2. Windtower
3. The South Wind Creek Hoodoos
4. Rimwall and the Three Sisters behind Wind Ridge

My friend brought his copy of Daffern's Kananaskis Country Trail Guide and I noticed that it has a trail description of this trail. It contained a photo of a massive hoodoo called the Obelisk. It would have made the trip worth doing. Unfortunately, it is no longer standing and the hiking trail is now a road to nowhere.
