So long, farewell, adieu, adieu 5th Bridge. Rest in Peace !
If you look close, you will see how the constant, merciless, battering of high waters of the Maligne has damaged the concrete footings. This baby is coming down.
This is not good news. The 5th bridge is a critical link to the trail system in Jasper. The Maligne Canyon area is probably the busiest day use area in the park, summer and winter.
We can only hope the park will stress strongly to the boys in Ottawa the importance of this bridge. Plead, beg, borrow, grovel if you have to. Things are getting a little desperate around here. Bridges, trails, facilities, roads damaged from high water, windstorms, wildlife and washouts have stretched staff and resources to a bursting point. I am at a loss for words, other than I am worried.

This will close down access from the bottom of the canyon, including the winter Ice Walks and ice climbing, and restrict access to the rock climbing areas on the opposite bank.
The tour companies are the biggest losers, financially - maybe they should pay for repairs. |
