This past weekend my daughter was up for a hike so I decided to introduce her to the trip to Mount Seton in the Downton Creek area. I did this trip 2 years ago and fell in love with the area: http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=36831

The start is up the Downton Creek area just past the road sign indicating 9km. A short way past the sign there is a creek and a large cut block to hiker's left of the creek. The creek takes you all the way up to the three little lakes in a beautiful basin area.

This year we drove past the creek and then a little way into the base of the cut block.

Last trip I noted that the trail was in rough shape due to dead fall and lack of use. It's deteriorated significantly in the past 2 years with more dead fall and a lot of vegetation beginning to fill in the foot bed in many areas. As before, the key is to stay close to the creek and only cross it above the convergence of its 2 main tributaries. Once crossing one of the tributaries, stay between the two but close to the one that is now on hiker's right and cross this one quite a bit higher up. You may want to recross it again once you start breaking into the alpine.

The hike has it all including many creek and flower photo ops.

And then there is the great, pristine basin.

And after a night's sleep, there is a 9400' peak to scramble

You can catch glimpses of Anderson Lake and an impressive peak beyond which I guessed is Whitecap (didn't have enough map to be sure).

We got our summit and enjoyed lunch in the Sun. Then it was back down to the basin, pack up our gear and back on down.

PS: The road has been cleared of all recent slides but there continues to be a problem where it was undercut

A beautiful area - always nice to see a trip from that area and mountain, especially one that doesn't involve the risk of death :P

In your opinion, will the eroding road last the season?

Survival of the road without major work looks pretty weather dependent. I wouldn't venture upstream any time there was a risk of a big rain storm.

This area sure asks for an overnighter. Very nice objective for you with your daughter!
