Hi Everyone,

Before you head out on your next ride, you might want to check the bolts that hold the seat.

I was commuting to work 2 weeks ago and the bolts on my seat sheared, causing my seat to pop off. Down I went.

I ended up with 4 separate fractures on my right leg plus partially severed ligament in my ankle. I was in surgery within the hour and in VGH for 3 days. I'm told no weight bearing at all for 8 weeks and lots of Physio after the cast comes off.

Needless to say, summer outdoor activities are now over, including my trip to the West Coast Trail.

Get your bikes checked out.

Sorry to hear that.

What was the make/model of the seat? Did it shear were the seat meets the shaft or were the shaft meets the frame?

What was the cause? Rusted screws?

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, good idea to check them bolts, as they never get looked over.

Was this a banana seat by chance?

That bites big time! Heal fast Fram. Thanks for warning others to check their bolts, who would have thought? I know how it feels to be left out of the game if that helps

Thanks for the best wishes.

I've examined my bike and there appears to be nothing faulty with either the seat or the post. It broke where the seat meets the shaft. The bolt is not rusty and except where there is the break, it actually looks fairly new.

With regard to make and model, I'm not sure. It says made in Italy and the name on the side has mostly worn off. The last 6 letters are " ERATOR"

Very sad to hear about this. A similar event happend to me in the winter but I got off lucky. I was riding along Fisherman's trail by the Seymour River when my seatpost snapped. Luckliy, I was in the middle of a forceful downstroke and my right leg held my weight as the seat dropped out from under me. The remaining portion of the seatpost, still sticking up from the bike frame, had a dangerous jagged edge that would easily cut a finger dragged across it. The post didn't break at the frame, it broke about 2" up, where the fender was strapped (with webbing, not a hard clamp) to it. I replaced the post with a beefed up model. From now on I'll be doing the occasional manifying-glass inspection, though this may not have spotted the micro-crack in the failed post. Maybe I'll just replace them every five years. Get well soon.

Where the seatpost enters the tube (frame)? Or where the seat clamps onto the seatpost?

These are the sort of things that cross my mind when I'm weaving down an incline at 60 km/h.

I have nothing but pity for the person who loses their summer this way. I hope it's nothing permanent.

Man would never of thought... Seems like defects to me. These metal posts should be strong enough to hold the weight of the rider.

Sorry this has ruined your summer plans, but heal well soon.
