Last year I was part of the medical team that looked over riders participating in a ride from Squamish to Whistler. The route we travelled along took us past Starvation Lake. Love to get back to this spot for a swim, I see the directions for Cheakamus Canyon, how far is it from the parking area to foot it in?
Thx. |

Thanks Dru. I had seen those directions but thought from your reply that there might be another way. So it's only about 20 min from the parking area... Great! |

We ended up going to Brohm today. GF has pretty bad blisters to do the walk into Starvation. |

I think this trail has seen some significant upgrade lately. We did it today at a very casual pace from the north end (highway 99-just above the rail bridge over the river) to the south end and then back. It was no more than 45 minutes to the lake and probably 25 minutes more from the lake to the north end of Paradise Valley Road. From the north end to the lake is extraordinarily well graded and maintained. South of the lake it is steeper and rougher, but still a wide open trail. I've updated the trail wiki to reflect our experience.
There was a big crew of people camped at the lake with at least 3 4x4s. I don't know if they had a key to the gate on the highway or found a way around. The gate was closed when we drove by. If you're looking for their campsite you can follow the trail of little white flags and shit along the shore of the lake they were swimming in. First class. |

Yeh- you can drive in from Highway 99, starting at the gate opposite Berubis (about 1.7 km north of the Big Orange Bridge). People seem to be able to drive around this gate all the time, and then you can drive right into Starvation Lake. Sadly, it is a favourite with the beer drinking party crowd.
Interestingly, there are some basalt columns there- suggesting that this was once the site of a minor volcanic eruption- hot springs or geothermal anyone? |
